512 MB GDDR3 RAM - unified memory. Doesn't matter if CPU or GPU accessing it is the same speed. Very convenient for developers if they pushing for visual aspects of a game.

That was true in the past but not really any more. The basic install is fully automated on most distro. GUI is not that much different that WINDOWS.
PS3 Yellow Dog installation will be automatic and easy. Reason is Yellow Dog needs to support only a known hardware configuration that will not change during console lifetime. There is no need drivers for 100s different video cards, network cards, motherboards and so on.

You could install any OS on PS3 that supports CELL processor. As for now "Yellow Dog" is the only now, but in the near future there could be more.
Knowing Linux community and number of open projects(software for free) on sourceforge.net there could be very quickly a high number of application available for Yellow Dog since it comes with GCC compiler. Some of them will require only recompiling.
