Being able to free the GPU of ever having to render anything outside of frame because it can all be loaded instantly when needed is a game changer. Being able to move across a game world at insane speeds while it all loads seamlessly and with little to no pop-in is a game changer. Or just teleporting around a giant world with no loading.

@SyntheticForm:

Well, I meant in regards to the realms and game worlds of God of War 2 (the new God of War 2), but I guess that can work too lol. The streaming speeds also means Spiderman can swing faster in the second game too since the PS5 won't have to wait for all of the assets to stream in while you're swinging at insane speeds. They'll just be there by the time you're there. I cannot wait!

The SSD speeds gives them a whole new way of approaching game development so they're excited to see what they can do with it. The XSX is more powerful and I'm sure devs can't wait to squeeze every bit out, but that's less exciting than a paradigm shift in game design.

Or or or or or... Kratos getting thrown between different realms and all across the game worlds crashing threw trees, mountains, etc. all in real time during a boss fight with full visual fidelity. That's next-gen right there son. Things we have never seen before.

You know Sony's been in the audio game for a long time, right? And they're constantly pushing tech themselves as well? Their 3D audio tech with headphones that are out right now are Dolby's biggest competitors and many people are saying it's even better than Dolby's, due to the possibility of having a custom HRTF.

Sony's one of Dolby's main competitors in that market and critics say they're giving Dolby a run for their money. And Dolby doesn't cater to people's personal HRTFs.

@343:

Because of diminishing returns. We see that with various different cards on PC. More powerful, but not enough to really make a huge difference, if any difference. Sometimes, more power doesn't even translate to more usable power. And roughly 8 TF is what you need to consistently hit 4K which both consoles are already past.

Devs still won't make full use of the SSD for PC games until significantly more people start adopting them. Or maybe they'll have two builds of their games, one for SSD and one for HDD, if they're developing with the consoles in mind first.

They showed Spiderman, which I think is a better showcase. One of the biggest complaints about SpidermanPS4 is that his fastest swinging was still too slow and this was due to the slow streaming of data from the HDD and RAM. Not gonna be a problem on the PS5.

Maybe we'll get even faster bikes in Days Gone 2, but the first was a pretty sparse game and having a loading showcase for it would be cool, but much more unnecessary.

I wonder what it'll do for Dreams. Dreams' thermo is based on how much new information you've put into a scene and how much stuff is duplicated. Can it completely get rid of the thermo since the GPU only has to focus on what's being seen and everything else can be loaded on the SSD? Or will this not even be possible? We'll have to wait and see.

That's why they acquired Ninja Theory and that's what Hellblade 2 is for them. It's even based in Norse mythology.

Yup. That's why I don't get why everyone's claiming devs won't make good use of the PS5's SSD. It literally makes their jobs easier. Sure, it'll be a different game than they would have to make for PC and XSX, but they don't have to spend a ton of time crunching everything to fit on the RAM. So devs might as well take advantage of something that'll make their jobs easier.

You really think an advantage of 16% more TF is gonna make a drastic difference in the age of diminishing returns? Mind you, the PS4 had 30% more TF than the Xbox One, and all we really saw was 900p games vs. 1080p ones. So, what? We'll be seeing 4K games vs. slightly below 4K games? The biggest difference between the PS5 and XSX are the speeds of the SSDs.

You're right. Fanboying is blocking common sense.

@PitbullMonster:

Yeah, in terms of raw GPU and CPU power, next-gen is the most evenly matched compared to previous gens. But people act like the difference is huge. The PS4 GPU being 30% more powerful only lent it to having games run at a 40% higher resolution (900p vs. 1080p). What's a 16% gonna make? Where we'll really see the differences between the two's APUs will be in how the systems are setup to make use of them, rather than raw power alone.

Nope, it's the devs who are saying it'll solve a lot of their problems since super fast SSDs is something they've wanted for years. So it's great that MS made the leap too, but Sony's implementation basically opens the floodgates on what's possible. It'll allow devs to make full use of the GPU since it only has to render what you see and only what you see at any given moment while everything else will be streamed in instantaneously by the SSD as you look about. Tha...

Well, Mark Cerny already talked about a few instances of this helping. People complained that Spiderman wasn't able to swing fast enough on the PS4. This is due to the speed at which assets can stream in and Insomniac didn't want you swinging at speeds where you would notice all of the pop-in, not an issue on the PS5.

2147d ago 0 agree0 disagreeView comment

Cerny said the SSD handles a lot of the work of figuring out what data goes where and makes the devs jobs easier because of this. So why do people keep suggesting 3rd parties won't attempt to make better use of the system when its easy to do and it allows their games to look and perform better. There's really no reason any dev should unless they're that lazy or incompetent.

@343:

The XBO was also using DDR3. And a difference of 0.6 TF translates to 30% less TF. The difference between the PS5 and SX is 15%.

@S2Killinit:

It'll be great for everything, but I can especially see it working well for shooters and horror. Imagine being able to hear the exact position of another player in a shooter based on their footsteps. Not the general area like right now, but where they really are. Or having to realistically figure out where you're being shot at as you can hear bullets fly past. With horror, it's obvious.
