It's ludicrous isn't it? How can these companies not realise that making their games that little bit more "affordable" would naturally increase the potential consumer base.
I've lost my respect for Capcom but EA I never had any to loose.
What have I been saying all this time!.
The only issue with marketing is that it costs money, the more money Sony invests in a project the more said project is required to be a success in order to cover the expense, leading to games being developed only if they're practically guaranteed to sell well.
So if Sony did start heavily marketing indie games it may give rise to poor development practices much like what we see going on in the mainstream, where a game is required to have mass appeal in order to sell well...
I'll consider forgiving Capcom for their narrow-mindedness and stupidity if they stop chasing the mobile market as if it's their soul saviour, stop misusing DLC, bring back respectable iterations of popular franchises like Megaman, Power Stone, Rival Schools, Breath Of Fire, Dino Crisis and fix the god-awful mess that is the current Resident Evil franchise.
Until then Capcom may as well be THQ...
BTW thanks for mentioning my blog ;)
At least the Mega evolution designs are interesting, unlike many of the recent pokemon additions.
Mighty No.9 just broke through it's final stretch goal! Over $4,000,000 and 67,226 backers, those publishers can't afford not to take notice of this.
Thanks and well said.
I only hope this game is a huge success and helps influences other developers to create similar projects where they develop what they want rather than what they assume will be a guaranteed huge hit.
It' one of the most successful Kickstarter projects to date, or so I heard :) Same here, I've been a huge fan of Megaman since the 8 bit era so I can't wait to see how Mighty No.9 turns out.
Saw some great blogs and reviews this month, good luck guys!
Dang it, I need to get this.
Just backed this game on Kickstarter the other day, can't wait to get my hands on it :)
You got man, I'm still astonished at how well they sell every year.
I honestly can't think of any genres I "suck at" but if I had to pick one. Sports games, I can't stand most of them and that's probably one reason why I'm pretty crap at playing them, or at least the ones I've bothered playing in the past.
60FPS may improve some games, but it's certainly not a "requirement".
The only time a game running lower than 60FPS ever bothered me was with Ninja Theory's DmC: Devil May cry, it felt very choppy and slow at times compared to the original titles and there was a definite delayed reaction to my button presses. Although, I have been told that this could have been due to poor optimisation rather than a lower FPS anyway I just figured I'd put it out there.
But yeah, 60FPS isn't a requirement because there are very few games you'll r...
@caseh
I agree with you for the most part.
The problem with the current business model though, is it's focused solely on short term gain.
As it stands now publishers have the industry on the road to ruin, if all we get from them is updated versions of previously successful IPs then consumers will eventually grow bored of playing the same types of games over an over again, meaning publishers will eventually no longer be able make upwards ...
Danganronpa is a fantastic game, I'd recommend it to anyone :)
Videogame companies are supposed to create products based on consumer demand, but major publishers who now dictate the majority of the industry are pretty much telling us consumers what we want to play.
Consumers can make a difference though, by refusing to purchase generic, casualised, cookie cuter content, and demanding more quality, innovation and originality.
Great blog, you make some excellent points.
It's true, the term "AAA game" has lost most of it's original meaning, but that's no surprise really. I mean with constant disappointment, bloated budgets and over the top marketing campaigns, causing publishers profits to dwindle to the point a product earning them $7,million is considered a "failure" is ludicrous.
Generic over hyped yearly releases like COD, which apparently dictate...
Nice! I played Rival schools 2 a while back (one of the best fighters available IMO) Well hopefully if that were to happen Capcom's popular IP's would go to more competent developers.
Glad to hear it! :D I'm always happy knowing one of my blogs actually made an impact.
