It was never about free games? Prior to the PS4, that was the literally the only thing it was about. It was not required for online gaming.
There are many people who still only subscribe for the free games. If PS Plus didn't offer free games, I wouldn't subscribe to it. The only game I've purchased this generation that required PS Plus was Destiny.
