Well, Sony comes into the equation obviously as MS is competing directly with them. If there were no Sony around, 360 sales right now would be double what they are most probably.
You cannot understand any companies sales withoout factoring in the other companies sales, that is my understanding, sorry if it shocks you, not my intention.

I personally dont think so, Sony brand is very powerful, extremely so in Japan and Southern Europe.
PS2 managed 90% share market in some countries, that is something almost impossible to fight, MS can only play catch up, and that is what they do.
Every little advantage they take over Sony is meaningful for them.

Xbox 360 has an internal memory that can hold a limited number of patches.
Obviously it would be very stupid to have a console business model with online patches and not supporting that feature in each hardware SKU you release.
