So... it is not that people were bored of games of this kind... then?
Two more platforms to develop games for and a small retail market for games? Well... maybe it is not a smart move for Sony because they will lose money. But it could be good as a marketing move, because people who just have Xbox will know the Sony brand... well... everybody knows the Sony brand... What would be the gain for Sony in terms of investment in Xbox? The answer is... NO.
Reminds me CD Projekt... any real similarities?
What has done a console on each generation? A platform with good sales made developers improve and try harder to squid the possibilities of the machine. Without this, gaming industry will advance slower... Look now, we have NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR working everywhere, from consoles and PC to smartphones, smartwatches and TVs. It makes developers lazy. Is this what we want? Well, it is what Microsoft wants. Will Sony and Nintendo go in the same team as Microsoft with this? It seems... yes, but ...
PC and mobile... are far bigger than Sony and Nintendo on gaming. Competition is not in this castle, Mario.
How much has Microsoft invested on Xbox since year 2000? I'm not speaking only about 70K millions on ABK or 3K million in the 3redlights fiasco. I mean... all the invest (including what is paid to Microsoft Azure division each month for Game Pass and other Xbox services). Bing does not give me any liable data about this, only something from here and there.
I pay less than 1$ for GP a month... well... it still is an user. I've been doing this for years. Does it count?
Anyone can speak as a politician.
Well... it is cheaper to launch only on two platforms and it has a strong community right now. It is on PC, so it works on a Microsoft platform. Don't be angry, Phil.
Here we can still pay even less than $1 a month for GP. It doesn't cost us anything to do it among friends or strangers and we don't need a console to play the games, so.... The only thing that makes us pay more for GP is the achievement system, but we threw in the towel on that years ago. Investing hundreds of dollars in an Xbox is out of our plans, clearly, until they sell them at rock bottom prices like Xbox One S or those Xbox One's without BluRay drive when they were dying.
Microsoft Game Pass for Nintendo Switch could make some money to fill the gap (the money gap of 170.000 million dollars Xbox has gained).
Meta Quest 3 is really incredible... I have also Meta Quest 2 and the improvements are like a two console generations jump... and it has only begun, there is a lot of space for improvement. While Vision Pro... well...it is overpriced and underdeveloped, for the moment.
Microsoft could wait... make big money on PS5, PS6 and Nintendo... as well as PC... while preparing their next Xbox, to arrive after PS6 with a better hardware, posibilities and support... as well as cheaper to manufacture. In the way, Microsoft could make a real gaming brand among PlayStation, mobile and Nintendo gamers... playing in their field for 3 or 4 years... and, then... when we all want to play next Halo, next Gears, next Fable, etc. we will have to buy Microsoft hardware and service...
No way... "Sometimes the past is a mirror in which we can see the reflection of what danger the future holds." - Master Splinter
Maybe, Microsoft did not have plans for a next gen console and bet only on the cloud, but it makes not sense. As they need AMD to develop cloud based systems to support future games. BTW, arriving late to a generation is something only PlayStation can do successfully, as the past confirms.
This seems to be what happens when you fire part of the team, leave some of the best artist go and get some unknown localized "devs" to fill what the main team can't get to.
Add SEGA Dreamcast sequels or something like that... and some Rare titles that were in development, but were mismanage by Microsoft.
