They didn't "NEED" to do anything.
There are MANY egregious examples of stereotypes in modern video games, ESPECIALLY fighting games. Unless they're using or mocking the likeness of a specific person, they don't get hit with lawsuits.
This was strictly a design choice.

No, you can play KI S1/S2. You CAN'T play KI Season 3 now. Same way you can play Guilty Gear Xrd right now, but you can't play Xrd Revelator.

KI has the absolute best netcode out of any fighting game, other than Skullgirls.
