I believe the problem is more on the Sony-to-developer level. Customers clearly dont appreciate what the bad design decisions *REALLY* mean to 3rd party support of the PS3.
It is very likely that Sony will have to keep spending lavishly to keep games exlusive to the PS3. The 3rd party support is *all* going to Xbox 360. The Wii, well, it might get some mini-games, but the core Wii owner just does...
There have always been many different SKU (Stock Keeping Units) in the console world. If a N64 had Mario packed in, it was one SKU. If it was *replaced* with Zelda pack in, it kept the same SKU.
The trouble here for Sony, is this new Stripped-down 40GB PS3 has different capabilites.

Sony is clearly well known for a "Not if it isnt ours" syndrom. What happens is a company refuses to work with any other firms.
IBM used to do it in the 70s. They would push their products in every market segment to every customer no matter what.
Sony has done that hear. Sony Music and Sony Films were thinking "ah-ha! we can force a proprietary and closed BR on Sony Playstation users" and convinced the company to do this.

And, I'll volunteer the current libraries as evidence. The developers have had PS3 dev kits since 2004 - the fact that the PS3 was 12 months late isnt an excuse.

Project Gothum Racing 4 has a 8.6 / 10 on Metacritic.
That makes it the 4th best racing game on Xbox 360. But better than EVERYTHING available on PS3 or Wii (just to mention for completeness).
The very _WORST_ review, is a 7.5. Its a pretty tight pack of reviews, averaging to 8.6.

No. Its worse because Xbox 360 has a better game library. And there is no reason to think that will change.
LIVE, XBLM, XBLA, Messenger, Friends, Achievements, DLC, HD-Movies & TV, InternetTV, Windows Media Center, XNA Studio Express, XNA-Tube coming, and on and on.
Even if the PS3 had the good fortune of the Xbox 360 library, they would still fall far short of the overall value of Xbox 360 which has been doing things the PS3 owner simply cannot.

It is called Backwards Compatibility. If someone has a PS2, Why would anyone possibly buy a $400 PS3?
