HDMI is NOT REQUIRED at all. Thats why MS went with component and vga. The xbox 360 doesn't benefit with HDMI at all (other than the SLIGHT image quality difference on the elite and a reduction in cables mess). You can't get Dolby TrueHD through the elite's HDMI, you don't have to worry about HDCP, so whats the big freakin deal?

Once rental stores start stocking large amounts of either/both/ANY hd formats things will change.
Nobody local to me rents any HD Formats...well..ok not true. but the selection is too limited to justify the purchase of a player. Of course the selection is just too limited all together :)
It is just my personal opinion but I think that rentals will play the biggest role. the $25 (BD/HD-DVD) vs $15 (DVD) price difference makes buying hd movies a bit harder.
reiability is still an issue with memory cards. But it will be nice to get away from media with moving parts.
Solid state hdd, etc. Can't wait.
