That doesn't mean they are only counting first party exclusives...it means they are looking at what exclusives each first party publisher has released.
You need to keep reading the article and see they count third party exclusives. Mentioning Tchia, FFXVI, Forespoken, etc...

FFXVI sold 3 mil in less than a week and the Pixel Remaster just reached 3 mil after releasing in April.
Are people assuming FFXVI hasn't sold anything since that 3 mil announcement? It's in the top 10 best selling games of the year in the july NPDs.
Both those games have free demos. Maybe just play them to see if they are your cup of tea?
Well i enjoyed the Resident evil speed run trophies. Going on you tube looking for optimal routes.
But i only do those kind of playthroughs after a no rush go everywhere playthrough.
The yuffie DLC for FF7R is 20 and was well worth it. So if is like that i am in.
And when you reference the crazy times of DLC...it has been like that for awhile.
Fallout 4 has a list of post launch paid dlc. GTAIV had 2 big expansions. So it has been happening since the ps3 era.
