The articles *actual* topic is not the issue I was discussing -- its the headline, and the crappy misidentification of "developer" when they meant "publisher" -- even though they apparently aren't aware of the difference.

When discussing the topic at hand, it is absolutely critical to understand the difference between the two -- no where in the article do they mention the publisher specifically. Instead, they lump the publisher and the developer toget...

Publishers do, because they are interested in money. Developers don't, but because they are paid to, they do.

I hate it when so-called "gaming journalists" are too ignorant of how the industry works to understand the difference. Really says something about the site, when their articles are written from the perspective of someone who doesn't understand the fundamentals of game industry business.

You'd think anyone serious about their jo...

""Killer software lineup" is a gross overstatement."

On the contrary, compared to the 3DS lineup, the downloadable PSP/PS1 lineup currently available on PSN makes the 3DS software library look like a joke.

Let me just add a little extra something to my comment, before I move on.

Notice how Sony has been hard at work on "HD-ifying" PSP games via emulation with the PS3? Do you think that PSP games will simply be playable at the PSP's native resolution when the PSV comes out? Or will they actually be playable in HD? Also, anyone who owns PSP games on PSN will likely be able to DL them right onto their new Vita, given that the PS3 and PSP can already share PS1 titl...

The PSV will come out the gates with an entire library of PSP and PS1 classics available for download. We're talking over 200 great games here. Most of the PSP library is on par, or better than, the titles the 3DS has available to date.

That's gonna be hard to beat, even with the titles the 3DS can add by the time the PSV hits the shelves. I have to say that, even with the price drop, the 3DS is gonna have its hands full with the PSV.

That's a ...

I'm still gonna wait for the 3DSi, even if it costs $200, rather than $170.

I need the battery life to improve, and frankly, I'm desperately hoping they improve the 3D view angle on the screen, and the DS backwards compatibility as well. I just can't bring myself to buy hardware that I see as flawed in so many ways, even if its cheap.

Besides... obviously a 3DS redesign is in the works -- the next, cheaper-to-build revision always is, because tha...

20nm is a barrier for battery powered devices, due to electron loss issues that cause constant power drain at manufacturing process scales below that.

Mobile electronics are going to stop evolving by about 2014, for that reason, unless someone comes up with an amazing solution for the physics problem at hand, or comes up with a fantastic new mobile power source to replace batteries.

Desktop chips can continue to evolve down to about the 10nm range, where sim...

Objective-C is a terrible language to develop in (with regards to performance), and OpenGL ES isn't exactly high performance, either. There are a lot of factors that stop a generic mobile device from being able to compete with a dedicated gaming handheld, given the same hardware.

That said, I even doubt the iPhone 5 will match the Vita's CPU and GPU at all. It will likely be on par with the iPad 2, but in a handheld form factor.

Sorry, this just isn't true, unless you qualify it by stating that, given that mobile devices typically cap out at around "540p", the per-pixel workload that these GPUs could hande could work out to about the same as rendering a 720p image on a PS3 or 360.

The Qualcomm Adreno 220, despite being awesome, is not even one quarter the GPU that the PS3 or 360 have. The 320 isn't due out until very late 2012 (more likely it won't hit retail until 2013), and I...

I think it'll certainly appeal more to parents now. The DSi cruised along at the same price for years, and did very well.

The trouble is that those DSLite's and DSi's are still in existence, and parents love to recycle stuff, sell their kids old stuff, buy old stuff for their kids, etc. The DS legacy will get in the way of the 3DS more than anything else.

LoL. I'm actually *replacing* my smartphone with a 3G Vita, when it comes out. My old smartphone will still work with WiFi and no data plan, and be handy as a bookkeeping device, but the Vita will be the device I use most of the time.

Smartphone gaming sucks. If every smartphone had Xperia Play controls, maybe it'd be different, but... they don't. Thus, they suck.

I'm guessing you either (a) only play phone games, and have no idea what you're talking about, comparing crappy phone games to *actual* handheld gaming, or (b) work for Apple.

If there's a reason outside of the Vita, its, ironically, the popularity and relative low expense of the DSLite and DSi, not iOS devices.

20 free games that I have played approximately 40x over, all together, since the 1980s?

I don't think that's worth it, personally. Some of those games I didn't buy on the NES for a reason to begin with, or any near-free iteration since, like Wii VC. I'm not going to change my mind now simply because they are a couple dollars cheaper.

They aren't worth the time to play *yet again*.

I am excited to see what the DSi drops to. It'd be foolhardy to keep the DSi at $149.99, with this change, after all.

$129.99 maybe?

I can "figure it out" for you, Kristoffer.

Phones with decently high rez screens have only been available since about 2009, and only commonplace since 2010, and phones with a decent amount of RAM are the same.

Also, The EVE Online interface is freaking tiny, as-is. Fitting it on a phone would be a nightmare.

On top of that, Java (Android) and Objective-C (iOS) only run about half as fast as C/C++, even with the latest compilation t...

"if it has the same crappy games that PSP did it doesn't matter"

Never owned a PSP, eh?

In my, and probably about 70M other people's opinions, the PSP lineup was far superior to that of the DS.

The PSP RPG lineup absolutely destroys the DS RPG lineup, even without the PS1 classics. And due to their paced & pausable gameplay style, lots of mobile gamers are RPG fans...

Devs don't get a cut until the development costs are paid, out of their would-be cut, to the publisher.

The thing that sucks about that is that by the time the devs pay for their game development out of their cut, the publisher has typically made way way more than the game cost to make. That's how they deal with all the failed projects -- by penalizing the mildly successful ones.

This chart has a lot of stuff slightly wrong, although the general idea is accurate.

Retail takes around $20, not $12. Also, packaging costs are mostly due to printed manuals, not discs, unless its a multi-disc set, and a nonstandard case for said discs.

The "45%" for programming and development is only typically true on games which have new, in-house engines. Those costs get much cheaper with sequels, and middleware engines (like Unreal or CryEng...
