Mario would sell on brand alone, being it a sidescroller or not. Of LBP I honestly don't know. What about Sonic Generations? Was it a big hit? I just think that when it comes to sidescrollers in the west, there aren't that many sucess stories.

Are you kidding me? Way to trivialize the situation. No one is complaining because graphics are not mind blowing on current gen, but because it isn't on pair even with what was already possible to do with a ps360 game by the begining of the generation. And that's coming from a capable developer whose last games never failed to impress graphic-wise. That's not lazy work, it is just plain unprofessionalism.

I hate that they brought Bane again to another arkham game, but I do like the Hatter, Deathstroke (obviously), Copperhead and the Joker (one can't never have enough of the Joker). As for Penguin, I'm indiferent.
Now I don't think he would fit an Batman origin story, but I really really would like to see the Dollmaker (and his family) in this game. I'd also like to see Man-Bat too (think about the awesomeness of facing a 7-foot bat monster!).

I hated the Las Plagas too, (found them much more goofy than scary) but despite of them, RE4 was still very atmospheric, and that's a really good thing. Should you take that hability to create a dark, moody setting and add into that a better (scarier) kind of enemy, it just can't go wrong. It's basically what Visceral did with dead space, and Mikami might do it even better.
