@frostypants
Merely matches? No, $650-700 would get you well above, if going from scratch.
A quick toss-together without serious sacrifice on PCPartPicker gives me just about $700, WITH Windows license.

AMD-FX6200
GTX 760
500GB 7200RPM HDD
8GB RAM

PSU, case, optical drive, etc, all included. Cheap keyboard, $5, go to eBay for a gaming mouse and get someone's 6 month old Razer for $15-20.

To be compa...

My biggest issues were the price and the anticlimactic ending. It suddenly lost its charm at that last journal entry, wrapping things up too neatly after all this struggle in a very sudden manner.

I think it would have had much more of an impact if it was left ambiguous.

Build yourself a nice PC, friend. Whether from scratch or finding a decent refurb on a deal site (Woot is good for that) and slapping in some better hardware, you'll get the most bang for your buck in terms of performance, versus a console.

I love my consoles dearly, but if you want power and performance, PC is the best route.

So far there seems to be nothing conclusive, only that it grabs DNS info, hashes it and that's about it. No one has been able to determine whether any data actually gets sent to Valve, and most seem to be assuming that if it's really used, it is used to check a list LOCALLY. No data mining, no NSA, etc.

The only thing to be seriously concerned about at this point is that you might get banned for visiting blacklisted sites, and it's most likely got safe guards for...

That's my issue with it.

When it's pitched as "next-gen gaming", but can be done on the previous gen, why are they touting it as a revolution?

Titanfall is supposed to be THE Xbox One game that will draw people to the console. Why? If it not only looks a little dated, but plays the same as the last-gen version... what's the point?

I hate Flappy Bird and how it's just spread all over gaming media right now... but this is actually kind of interesting. If you play for a bit and get out just past a few pipes, it's really nifty seeing everyone else not make it while you speed ahead.

I imagine it's what a single sperm feels like, racing to the egg and getting ahead of the rest.

Also, the death percentages are cool.

It looks like it's oozing with atmosphere.

And in some areas, actual ooze.

Facial capture itself is nothing new, but what's being shown here is the advancement in the technology. LA Noire's capture required 32 cameras. This uses just one, and looks better in many ways (most notably, not so exaggerated movements).

If the tech is cheap enough and uses 1 camera vs 32, and can be done in just about any room rather than a large, elaborately set-up one, it's important news.

Any kind of dinosaurs? Or do they have to be generally enemies, a la Turok?

I'm working on a game involving dinosaurs, but it might not be what you're looking for. It's a sidescroller...and there are rainbows... can't say much more than that.

I could be totally wrong on this, so forgive me if I am:

You'd still be able to run it at 4K or higher, regardless of the intended "max" settings found in the performance options. Games require a cap for consoles because there isn't the varying hardware, it's all the same, so they try and push the best graphics they can with what they have for the best performance, and it's all locked when produced onto disc.

PCs are only limited by ...

I love Valve and everything they do, but I don't believe this is exactly how it went.

Valve's method of "when it's done" works for them, they have nothing else to worry about because Steam is providing a huge revenue source, and it's how they've operated for a good deal of time now.

It works, for Valve. When you bring in another group, made of people who have been in the industry for a while used to the normal way of doing thing...

Interesting look into how it is to work with Valve.

It's an odd opposite end of a spectrum, in my opinion. On one side, you have developers who describe their time with a major company like EA or Ubisoft as constant work and deadlines, while these guys had a difficult time with Valve's more relaxed methods.

Nothing negative or positive to say either way, just an interesting thing to note.

@starchild
"When a game is made it is usually using nearly 100% of a console's resources"

And that's when I stopped reading. Thanks for trying, but that's flat out wrong. If that made sense, then games would peak in visuals at the start of a systems generation.

Now, using the argument of disc-based games would make sense, as you can't just rewrite what's on a game disc, but we've moved to place where the bulk of data ...

You absolutely can do this kind of thing with console, there's no hardware limitation against it. A company can decide to put the effort into accommodating for different hardware, but that's about it.

Unreal Tournament 3 for the PS3 was mod-able.

And now with how close consoles are to being PCs in architecture, we may see it being even more likely.

I am in the process of developing a game and would like to avoid Kickstarter, due in part to this issue.

I have no plan other than to make a game, but it is indeed costly and I know I'm just not the kind of person who can organize well enough to feel responsible with people's money in that way. I mean, I am good with money. Like damn good. I can can calculate any budget in a scary accurate way, but it's usually my money or my family's money when they need the...

@Mr_cheese
Playstation Now and Vita TV are both entirely plausible for Sony TV integration, and could give them an edge in this market where everyone wants their device to do more than they need.

I wouldn't mind it one bit, honestly.

It's a good thing they don't care as much about the physical Steambox systems. They know they're not going to make tons on that, which is why they're mostly just licensing out the name.

The Linux-based OS was to cut development time for the OS and make sure it can be a freely accessible OS, rather than having to pay for a Windows license.

Valve is not looking for a quick explosion into the hardware market, this is a long term thing that they&#...
