I agree with you for the most part... however, I cannot agree that Halo is 'perfection'. I'm a big fan (of the first two games at least) but I don't believe that ANY game is 'perfect'. I personally believe Halo 3 should have been a bigger leap forward where overall 'graphics' are concerned. Unlike Gears of War it was being made on a new, more powerful platform so I expected more. With or without fog though, I'm really looking forward to this game. I suppose it'll be a bit more of a new experience for me since I never really got to play the first Gear's multiplayer online. I expect it will be my favorite aspect of the game for this one though.
I can speak as someone who actually bought an HD-DVD player (and still have it). I don't support Bluray simply because it's part of the PS3 or made by Sony. In fact, I wasn't happy at all back when HD-DVD lost the whole format war. The reason for this is because at that time I was focused more my movie collection than my game collection. HD-DVD was my HD format of choice because it was cheaper and was pretty much on par with Bluray. At that time at least. It was a very sad day when I got news...

I wasn't assuming that price won't make a difference. In fact in my first paragraph I stated "I'm not saying that price doesn't matter at all." I know it will help. I know there is parents that go on these 'impulse buys', but that's much more likely to happen during the holiday season than all year round. And of course the competitors consoles will have price drops of their own sooner or later. The thing is that I believe it's too early to really judge the significance of this price...

Honestly, 8-12 hours might seem short in some ways... but for a game like this I don't believe it'll be a problem. If there are really as many ways to effect the story as the developers have implied and every little thing can somehow influence the outcome, then it'll have a hell of alot of replay value. Are you saying you skipped all or most of the cutscenes in MGS4 on your first playthrough? That is the only way you could have beaten it in 10 hours.
There's no denying the Beta has its fair share of issues, but for me... it's barely hampered my enjoyment of the game. I've had to restart my PS3 several times before (though I've never had to sit through 10 minute load times like some others) but as soon as I'm in the game I forget about all that.
