It really seems like Nintendo's approach to gaming hardware is not at all an "enduring strength", but a fatal weakness. All of their recent hardware has been cheaply-made, low-spec, feature lacking stuff; well below the industry standard, but with gimmicks thrown in to try to ignite sales. While that approach worked (for a while) with the original Wii, the Wii died years ago, when the fad fizzled out and gamers lost interest in the waggle gimmick. Meanwhile the 360 and PS3 ar...
That's the truth. All these different gimmicky controllers, and compatibility of controllers with games is a complete mess; some games support only the gamepad, some don't support the "Pro" controller (which is nothing more than a bad ripoff of the 360 controller), most games don't support the classic controller, then you have the silly wiimotes, which are just awful gimmick controllers. A big mess of junk options to play games, instead of a single, decent, non-gimmick...
It is "not being bought" because, for what you pay, you get a very low-spec, feature-lacking console, missing many commonly expected features, and severely lacking in games. It is also completely based around an awkward gimmick, the bulky gamepad; if you don't like the size and ergonomics of the giant pad, tough luck. That's typical of Nintendo, living in a bubble; they go their own way, without listening to gamers, and expect people to accept their gimmicks with open arms...
Online-only games like Titanfall, PvZ GW, and Destiny are a complete waste of time. They REQUIRE connecting online and REQUIRE playing with other people, whether you want to or not. In a year or two, the games will have been completely forgotten, and there won't be any "gameplay" left in them. They'll be no better than drink coasters, if you own the discs.
I loved the original PvZ tower defense game, and liked the concept of PvZ GW, but since it was onlin...
Exactly. Funny the "second opinion" says that content is a problem, but they still give it an 8 out of 10? Really?
Playeressence is well known to be hugely biased towards Nintendo, they main guy there has defended all their poor decisions on the Wii U design for years, claiming that the console was very powerful and could compete no problem with the XB1 and PS4. No big surprise that they give Nintendo a pass on these reviews.
No, not because it's "cool" to hate on Nintendo. More like, people are tired of their silly gimmicks tied to crappy hardware. Nintendo's goal for over a decade has been to create the cheapest possible hardware, gimping the specs and features, and throwing in a gimmick to reel people in. They do this to maximize their profits, while minimizing their costs. While that approach worked (for a while) with the original Wii, people are tired of the gimmicks, and just want solid ha...
Let's hope that the sequel actually has a single player mode, the first one didn't so I skipped it. MP only games are a waste of time, especially when the servers are taken down.
You seem bitter (as usual). All you ever do these days is to whine about the failure of the Wii U.
If you want to blame someone for the disappointing Wii U, blame Nintendo. They are the ones who gimped the console, leaving out many commonly expected features, and severely gimping the specs. All to keep their profits high, and to accommodate the gimmicky gamepad.
You seem bitter.
The fault for the failure of the Wii U lies squarely with Nintendo itself, not the gaming fans they abandoned. When they decided to use the same tired old approach in console design as they did with the disappointing Wii, they sealed the fate of the Wii U.
That old formula, of making the cheapest possible base console, throwing in a questionable gimmick, and expecting huge sales, simply doesn't work anymore. It did work, for a while, with...
No offense, but that is a very meager list of games for 2015-2016. At this point it really seems like the Wii U is coasting downhill towards the end of its lifespan. It's really a shame that Nintendo put so little time and effort into the design of the Wii U, they simply didn't build it to last for a generation, and certainly didn't build it to be a competitive product. They seem to have thought that the same design approach used for the disappointing Wii would work for the Wii U,...
If there's one thing that we've learned from Nintendo's recent products, its that they consciously avoid designing any kind of even remotely high end hardware. They instead design the cheapest possible base console, severely gimping the specs and outright leaving out commonly expected features, to keep their costs to a bare minimum (and to keep their profits high). They then throw in a gimmick to reel people in.
This approach worked (for a while) with the original...
There's a guy on ebay who makes modded Vita thumbstick attachments that are actually the same thumbstick caps as used on the XB1, I bought a set and they work great. They're a little bulky, but overall they improve the feel of those tiny analog sticks a huge amount. You should check them out!
It shows how many corners Nintendo cut on the base Wii U console, to keep their costs to a bare minimum and to accommodate the high cost of the gamepad gimmick. It probably would have cost them less than $5 to include an ethernet port, but they cheaped out and left it out, like so many other commonly-expected features in consoles these days.
In fact, they clearly intended to increase their profits by overcharging for a simple cable adapter that probably costs 50 cents to mak...
Wait until the sales numbers hit, I bet this game sells far worse than Bayonetta 2 in the long run, and that one only sold 670k worldwide (was a commercial failure). Splatoon has a LOT less content than Bayonetta 2, and doesn't look to be worth even close to $60 at launch, much less even $40. It's essentially an online-only shooter with 5 stages and 2 modes, extremely limited options, almost no single player content (yes it has a tiny SP mode with a few hours of content, but basical...
From the review: "This brings up the expected downfall of Splatoon: Nintendo’s lack of experience (understanding?) in online multiplayer games. There’s no way to play custom matches, jump in and out of games or quickly change weapon loadouts during matches. More importantly there’s no way to communicate with your teammates and it’s a bit of a hassle to get a game started. The overhead online experience is archaic compared to what we’ve come to expect from modern online games and is a seri...
This is a game with a stunning paucity of content, with a measly 5 maps, two online modes, and very short, limited single-player content (5 hours or so). It's effectively an online-only third person shooter with tiny matches and very limited content, not even close to being worth $60 at launch (or even $40). This game should have been a $20 downloadable-only game at most, given the amount of content.
Even a 7.9 is far too generous, had this not been Nintendo (who are of...
Very well said, you hit the nail on the head with your assessment!
The number one reason why this and all the other 3rd party developers have skipped the Wii U, is quite simply because the console wasn't built to handle current generation games. the specs and features are so lacking, in many cases it can't even handle LAST generation games as ports. Only 2gb RAM (with only 1gb available for games), weak CPU, weak GPU, no internal HDD (or even a bay for one), the list...

No, it isn't. You can play Rivals in offline mode, an Internet connection isn't required. Better check before you post nonsense.
This article is nothing but fanboy gibberish. Nintendo is far, far from the "only games developer that understands 'play'". In fact, I would say they are the only gaming HARDWARE developer that DOESN'T understand how to actually design good hardware, and that explains the failure of the Wii U. Over the last decade or so, they have repeatedly delivered subpar, barebones gaming hardware, with meager specs and many missing features. They then throw in a cheap gimmick to...
