Maybe it is the same size but maybe MS managed to incorporate the power brick into the console like the PS3, so that's another plus.
Also, I just checked out some images of the PS3 slim side by side with a current 360 model and they seem to be about the same size. So, in that respect I don't think MS really needs to reduce the size of the console. They just need to make it more reliable and add standard features like the HDD and the WiFi.

A redesign is more important because it means that MS has been focusing on making the console reliable.
Slimming down the 360 would follow along with the reduction of chipset size, but then the failure rate might remain the same.

It's optional if I want to play my games in 3D, but for Sony's first party devs, it's going to be mandatory that they design their games to render in 3D. I'd rather have the developer concentrating on making the game look visually stunning than just have it render in 3D.

If Microsoft is really clever they will show off target render trailers for the next generation of games the same way Sony did with Killzone 2 in 2005. That way, Microsoft can show off a bunch of games that won't even be coming out for years but they will definitely excite the fans with really good-looking games.
