Really, my theory is that someone important at Microsoft got it in their head that the reason the PS2 beat the XBox, despite the XBox being technologically superior, is because the PS2 was "simpler" since it had no HD. They probably justified this by saying few people bought the PS2's optional HD attachment.

So this high-ranking person FORCED the issue and decided to release a "PS2-like" console with no HD despite many people saying it was probably a bad ...

It IS geting a bit out of control at N4G with negative 360 stories. We don't actually need an article for *every* customer who gets a RRoD.

I keep waiting for the headline "Microsoft kicked puppy, burned down house, assaulted grandmother of 360 owner who got RRoD."

I'm not sure where, exactly, people got the idea that Microsoft was the Evil Empire and Sony was the Heroic Rebellion worthy of Constant Defense. All corporations are evil, and Sony's no ...

This is news?

I thought everyone realized it was a mistake, including Microsoft about 5 minutes after they released the 360.

The following transcript from Microsoft HQ is dated November 22nd, 2005 at 12:07 AM:

"Alright, the Core and Premium units are finally on store shelves!"
"Great! Wait, what's the Core?"
"You know, the 360's without a hard drive?"
"...the whats without WHAT?"

Do people really get paid for what anounts to little more than professional guesswork?

Seriously, anyone paying any attention to gaming this year could've made this exact same "analysis" and "predictions".

I'm not saying she's wrong, she's most likely right...but she's just repeating what people have been saying since late 2007.

Still not seeing it anywhere. Can you explain to us where exactly on the site it is?

I'm also pretty sure that CoD4 for the PS3 can't be #3 on any Top Sellers list if the 360 version is #9 for JUST Video Games and the PS3 version isn't on the Top Selling Video Games category at all.

Got a source on that?

Cuz when I check the top selling in the Video Games category I get:

As others have said, this isn't like Microsoft as a company conspired to screw this kid over.

Some f*cking idiot at a repair center somewhere screwed up bigtime. It sucks, and it shouldnt've happened, but to blame Microsoft *as a company* for it is a little overkill.

That being said, they should offer *something* in return.

Yes, it's just a reflex. You dared imply Microsoft was NOT responsible for something evil, and thus incurred the wrath of the Sony Fanboy hordes here at N4G. Saying positive, or even just non-negative things about the 360 and/or Microsoft isn't welcome here. Fun, huh?

And the sad thing is, you're right. It's not like Bill Gates himself came down, wiped the permanent marker off the case, then kicked this guy's puppy while burning down a rainbow. It was a mistake by someone ...

Actually, he's getting disagrees for the same reason you will - because crap like "hope the kid made the right choice and jumped over to play B3yond" and "With your "next gen" technology. Because its the only wait to play "Exclusive" Multiple platform PC titles. (Remember it only takes up to a month to get another defective unit that just hasn't RROD'd yet)" goes in the Open Zone, not here. There's a REASON for the two different Zones now, you know. ...

I still don't understand Microsoft's strategy by not having a standard HD.

They did it RIGHT with the original XBox (which did a lot of stuff wrong), then decided to do it WRONG with the 360 (which did a lot of stuff right)?

If they were going to use a smaller disc media, it would make sense to make up for this through a standardized hard drive.

I just don't get it. Is there some industry-wide rule that every console maker this generation has to h...

"The ugly side of the gaming business that is for sure. It is definately a wake up call that if you think Sony, Nintendo or MS have your best interest's as a gamer at heart you are fooling yourself."

Posted earlier in this thread, I just wanted to repeat it since, well, it's worth repeating.

This isn't nearly as unsual as you might think.

Features and ideas are scrapped all the time because of a lack of time, money, or both. Doesn't necessarily mean they were bad ideas or features, though, so if a sequel comes around, that's a great time to take another look at them.

In Halo 2's case, it was almost infamously rushed, so I'd guess it was a lack of time to implement properly. Just because a feature made it to beta doesn't mean the feature *worked*.

I still say the XBox Live platform is somewhat wasted until an XBox Handheld comes out.

A multi-console gamertag and multi-console achievements sounds very tempting. Also, people might find the Live Gold a fee a bit easier to swallow if it ALSO meant having the same XBox Live interface on a sleek console system - as long as it stayed at $50 a year for BOTH platforms (as it does for the PC now).

The RRoD issue has made me hesitant to look at any further Microsoft...

"The 360 build is brighter and has slightly more vibrant color while the PS3 build has less aliasing issues."

This is a strange flip-flop from usual, where the PS3 usually has aliasing issues while the 360 does not.

Sounds like we'll have another nearly-identical console release that sad fanboys will post comparison videos of in a desperate attempt to spot a pixel or two of difference and thus further attempt to justify their purchase to themselves. <...

Did Heavenly Sword or Ratchet and Clank really "try something new", though? I didn't see either game praised for an over-abundance of innovation.

Gears of Wars gets a lot of "innovation" praise, and I think most of it isn't really warranted either. It's slightly more innovative than either of the above two, but it's hardly genre-shaking material.

I'm not sure why the "It's a handheld game" thing gets to be an excuse. Jeanne D'Arc was also a handheld game.

I do agree that "A few short games" is not a tendency. However, over the last year we had (off the top of my head):

Heavenly Sword - short
Halo 3 - short
CoD4 - short
Mass Effect - main quest was short(er) than an RPG should probably be
Bioshock - shorter than you'd expect from the game type
Gears ...

This is the direction the game industry is going in, like it or not.

Games are getting more and more expensive to make, so shorter games will become more and more common. It will only get worse as games get even more expensive. It just makes more financial sense to release shorter games with little-to-no innovation, since that's what brings in the guaranteed cash.

This is one of the reasons I look toward more "indy" developers for real innovation. Th...

Well, as a follow-up, Microsoft does warn against this sort of thing:

"How to move a gamer profile from one console to another.
As we describe in Take Xbox Live on Vacation, roaming with Xbox 360 requires an Xbox 360 Memory Unit to store your Xbox Live profile and your saved games.

While you can, in fact, perform the activity Recover Gamertag from Xbox Live to effectively import a fresh version of your profile to your console—or to your friend's conso...
