Consoles are basically PCs anyway. You dont really need a traditional console anymore. The next gen xbox will be able to play any game you buy on xbox or steam. So in a way you wont need a Playstation either since more and more of their games are also going to PC which is the platform that 80% of devs say they prefer to develop for. If you didnt know, they have to report accurate sales and revenue figures to the SEC. If not, there would be serious legal ramifications. So what they report is most likely accurate. With that being said, they are shifting away from that and selling the ecosystem instead.

Nintendo and Playstation can deliver all the numbers they want. It doesnt matter much because hardware isn't the only way to make money in the industry. Maybe decades ago but not now. That's why you see sony putting more and more games on PC. They know its the games that keeps the money coming. Consoles stagnate but not the software.

People said the same thing about xbox 360 launching early but it turned out pretty good. Microsoft's R&D is much larger and more cash rich than Sony's. They have the money to do it. One of the reason Sony is waiting because they arent ready to spend billions more on hardware and the PS5 is still selling and that would definitely hurt their sales. Plus they just released Ps5 pro.
