Microsoft should still consider opening up their platform for mods and UGC. If they don't then they'll be forfeiting a potentially significant category of games to Sony.

Instead of spending $20M on advertising they can get free airtime on every new channel, talk show, late night show, radio talk show and internet blog for free.

That kind of guaranteed media coverage is like gold. They should charge companies to ride on their coat tails... "media controversy over starbucks(tm) hot coffee mod" or "gamers get 25 MPG while running over underage hookers in their 2008 Ford Escape"

but I believe they are still down about $5B over the lifetime of the original Xbox and the 360.

They've cust costs on PS3s but are still losing money on each unit. The PSP and PS2 are both profitable plus they get revenue on software sales across all platforms. If you add it all up they managed to make a profit which probably surprised a lot of investors.

Blade is right. 18K a week is not that much but it wasn't long ago that the 360 was crushing the PS3 2 to 1. The tides are shifting and if the PS3 continues building momentum it could easily pull away and increase the gap.

There are a lot of PS2 gamers who are waiting for their favorite franchises before buying a next gen console and many of those are going to be exclusive to PS3. There may even be a few 360 owners who will buy a PS3 to play GT, MGS4, KZ2 or FFXIII. That could s...

But you're right and it's not just by keeping prices low for American consumers. It's also by directly financing US debt. Countries like China and Japan each hold over a trillion dollars in US assets. Middle Eastern oil producing countries hold huge amount of US dollars in reserves as well.

Think about this... as weak as the USD is right now, if China sold off just 5% of their reserves ($60B) the dollar would fall like a rock and our inflation would go through the roof. It's a pr...

But I'm sure Rockstar have it figured out. Perhaps an option to use the HDD to improve performance if it's available. Anyone who wants to play the exclusive DLC will need a HDD anyway so it may not be a huge deal.

I also wonder how they will be able to fit GTA IV on one DVD or if there will be multiple discs.

I think we will begin to see more and more games that expose the limitations of the 360.

Enjoying video games at home is more responsible than a lot of other things I could be doing that would be consider mature, like playing a $100 round of golf or going to Vegas for the weekend.

The author of the article is basing her argument on the incorrect assumption that games are juvenile and gamers are adolescent. She should do some real research by talking to gamers rather than lazily rearranging her prejudices and regurgitating tired cliches about basement dwelling gamer ...

Universal and Paramount especially need to move on because time is running out. From the article (caps added)...

"And the motion picture industry, for years dependent on the profit center of disc sales, need to sell their back catalogs – PERHAPS FOR THE LAST TIME – to consumers who wish to experience films the way their directors intended."

Once everything goes digital and "on demand," people aren't going to invest in building their library of dis...

Both games are great. I can't see anyone not liking Uncharted but if Ratchet is not your thing you shouldn't have any problems selling it off and using that money toward Warhawk.

It's only been a year and they've already reduced component costs by 50% and now they're cutting the cost of producing the cell. lower power requirements also translate into more cost reductions, smaller fans, smaller power supply, etc.

If sony can pass on these savings to consumers, they could flood the market with $299 PS3s. That's a great value. Hell - that's only $50 more than the retail price of a Wii.

At this point it's just about saving face. There's no realistic way that HDDVD can come back and win. If Toshiba insists on staying in the fight, they'll just prolong the confusion and delay the adoption of HD technology.

Of course, that may be in their best interest. Since they hold many of the patents for DVD, the longer people continue to buy DVDs the longer they'll be able to collect their licensing fees.

The guy seems like an idiot. Not a professional stock trader at all. I'm surprised that he would even be able to file those claims officially without having some kind of certification or registration. They must do things differently in Japan.

It's pretty clear that the writer is posting an article about his limited personal experience without much additional research.

If Tiscali is indeed blocking P2P traffic it would affect more than just PS3 COD4 players since most multiplayer games use P2P on both PS3 and X360, even World of Warcraft uses P2P for patch downloads not to mention services like bittorrent and Skype.

It's misleading for him to state it as a problem specific to PS3 COD4 players just because ...

I thought Capcom said the pricing difference had something to do with their "business model" and now they say it's up to the retailers?

Something smells fishy... like a payoff covered in fish guts.

Sony seems to be building momentum in 2008 across all of their product lines.

Consumer electronics is a cyclical industry so it could be that Sony is just timing their push to coincide with the general public's readiness to upgrade to HD (tvs, games, movies). Maybe they thought 2007 was too early for most people.

Probably got some free media coverage for it too.

Anyway, this deal is a nice gesture by Sony and may win them some brand loyalty points from customers who might otherwise have harbored some resentment at Sony for "killing" HDDVD.
