Sony sells each PS3 for less than that to their retailers so Sony takes a loss on each one if the component costs are $400.
You're right so I agreed with you. I meant to characterize a PS2 owner who hadn't yet bought a PS3/360 trying to make a decision on what console to buy for playing GTA4.
My presumption was that they would be more interested in PS2 franchises but I probably overplayed that. It's fair to assume that many PS2 owners are also interested in Xbox games. I'm interested in Bioshock and Lost Odyssey, for example.
I agreed with you. I was rushed so I just copied the best formatted list I could find with google. Here are some additional references:

Attach rate of 8.3 if you use the low range of 1B software units. This is as of Dec 2007.
"Sony added that since its release in North America on October 26, 2000, more than 120 million hardware un...
The PS2 lifetime attach rate is 9.8 (11.2 in the US) and the PS1 attach rate is 13.2 ( http://games.slashdot.org/c...
Keep in mind that the attach rate will generally go up the longer a console is on the market so it only makes sense that the X360 has the highest attach rate for this generation since it's been on the market a year longer than both the Wii and PS3.
Think ...
Having high attach rates is a good thing in general but they can be misleading because of the way they are calculated. Attach rates are calculated as total software units / total hardware units so they favor consoles that have been available longer.
This is obviously a better metric for MS which launched a year earlier than the Wii and PS3, which is one reason they've been pushing it so hard as a yard stick for success this generation.
Let's take for example a typic...
Blu-ray win definitely adds a check to the PS3 side of the PS3/360 T chart but I think the buzz around big playstation franchises coming to the PS3 is contributing to that perceived value as well.
Let's take a hypothetical gamer who hasn't bought an HD console yet and imagine what his decision making process looks like for buying a console to go with GTAIV... (stream of consciousness mode)
...hmmm... I hear the Xbox will have exclusive DLC for GTAIV and damn I love t...
I doubt that MS would come out with a new console this soon. There would be no advantage for them to do anything until Sony/Nintendo also announce new consoles. Anything sooner and all they would be doing is cannibalizing their current fanbase while they pissed off third-party game developers. Let's take a look at this from a customer and developer perspective.
Customers: Anybody who hasn't made a jump to an HD console yet would probably write off the 360 as "last gen"...
I can understand the SCEE store not having an A-Z listing because of the localization issue, i.e. A-Z listings would be hard to maintain across all of the languages that SCEE covers. Not sure about the other design decisions though.
Not to make excuses for them but the EU guys have a much more difficult problem to deal with because of all of the languages, currencies and legal jurisdictions within the SCEE territories.
If anything they might want to consider grouping...
It's not going to be for everyone so I doubt that it will outsell any of the major franchises but I for one would love to spend an hour or two building an LBP level with my daughter.
Having fun and goofing around while teaching her about physics and design principles would be well worth the price of a PS3 if I didn't already have one. Playing through a level that we created together would be a blast.
There is so much potential for LBP to be more than just a "gam...
Long Live the PSN Store!
It's pretty clear that Home isn't coming out in the next few weeks, i.e. before GTA4 is launched but I would expect there to be some integration between GTA4 and Home, especially accomplishments/trophies.
When are we going to hear about that stuff?
And in Europe and Japan even longer than that. The PS3 has only beaten the 360 in the US since Jan though.
I really can't imagine what would be so great about the camera that they wouldn't be allowed to talk about it. Maybe you'll be able to record in-game clips and upload them or something.
I haven't heard anything about how MGS4 will be integrated with Home so maybe it'll be information about that.
Whatever it is, I'm sure it'll be sweet.
I'm guessing that the PSN Store is the first of many on the new XMB OS. Music/Movie store is next but why not SonyStyle or SonyReader after that?
I want whatever game is in that thumbnail and then a few minutes to myself...
Came late to this article but I feel compelled to correct your math. It's weekly sales not monthly and the calculation should be:
(6,530,000 / 51,975) = 126 weeks / 4 = 31 months
That's assuming that the gap stays at ~50K units/month. Undoubtably, the PS3 sales will increase with GT5P (in the US), GTA4, MGS4 and the inevitable price drop. By holiday season '08, the consoles will probably be neck-and-neck.
There are some spoilers but the preview hints at many more surprises that it doesn't give away.
Anyway, I have to go change my underwear now... :P
I'm so excited about this game! The kind of excitement you're supposed to call a doctor about if it lasts more than 4 hours.
Sony selling the Cell manufacturing plant to Toshiba is not that big a deal. Cell has always been a joint venture between Toshiba, Sony and IBM. The sale is part of Sony's strategy to move away from manufacturing to focus more on chip design.
That said, smaller chips would definitely reduce costs, not just in making the chips but all of the other components that would be impacted, i.e. less cooling, smaller power supply, consolidating other components, etc.
