Smartphone games are made for the lowest common denominator phones, most are built with 512 mb of RAM in mind. Switch will be okay for 1080p, as the Wii U could even do that with much less power.
There's an SD card slot which rumours say takes up to 128gig, but the 3DS SD slot accepted much higher than what was recommended so who knows.
A potato pc is not a mobile.
Only the highest end mobiles are 4 or sometimes 6 gig, and they're much more expensive and don't produce graphics half as good as the Switch.
More than 32 gig is just unrealistic in a mobile device. Hard drives are awful in mobiles, and solid state storage is expensive. There's a reason why iphones with more storage are hundreds of dollars more.
Luckily there's an SD card option rather than some expensive proprietary one, so we'll be able to buy more storage relatively cheaply.
They literally can't do much more than 32 gigs in a mobile system. Hard drives in mobile are just asking for failure, so solid state is needed (which is much much more expensive). There's a reason the iPhones with more storage cost hundreds of dollars more, solid state storage is expensive.
Thankfully there's an SD card slot, so you'll be able to purchase reasonably priced storage for it (unlike the VITA).
My phone has 6 gigs of RAM and 64 gigs of storage for $300. Despite having the fastest phone bar the iphone, I'm getting the Switch for the games. The thing is that smartphone games have to be developed for ancient phones, most apps are developed with a 512mb of RAM average in mind, meaning that the Switch will be able to beat any mobile game by miles, despite being slightly less powerful. Hell, look at the VITA, that thing only has 512mb of RAM and can pull off graphics as or more impres...
But it's not possible for it to be as powerful as a home console, the best they can do is close enough that they can get a few ports here and there.
New Mario they showed looks pretty impressive.
My phone has 6 gigs of RAM and likely outclasses the Switch in every way other than GPU. Still getting a Switch for the games though, mobile games kinda suck.
Didn't say they weren't.
By the end of the gen I wouldn't be surprised if we saw 64 gig cards, maybe even 128.
Good luck getting any real 3rd party support with your shoddy 50gig blurays /s
Don't tell me what to do.
If the Switch is using the Tegra X1 then it's already more powerful than the Wii U. And we know that it's at least using the X1, possibly even the X2 from Nvidia's website.
There's no extra processing in the dock but every mobile device ever performs better on mains power, that's just a fact. If you've ever gamed on a laptop you would know that just being able to draw more power from the mains rather than from the battery is enough for better performance, and ...
Well, to be fair, the Wii U broke records in its first month (although those records were soon broken again by the PS4).
I could've sworn you were a diehard Nintendo hater. Oh wait, nothing's changed. ;)
1. I called it a system, not a home console.
2. We don't know that the best it can do is 720p. There's a rumour that the screen is 720p, but when docked there's nothing stopping it from drawing more power from mains (no need to conserve battery) to bring the resolution up to 1080p. Hell, Smash Bros on the Wii U was 1080p 60fps with 8 players on the Wii U, which is less powerful than the Switch.
Stop spreading misinformation, Nintendo hasn't confirmed anything...
Eh, phones are going for 4k as a marketing term or for VR, the Switch needs neither so going for 720p with improved graphics seems smart enough for me. Honestly at that size the difference between 720 and 1080 would be barely noticeable anyway (the wiiu gamepad was 480p!).
I agree. I also think it would have been much more refreshing if there hadn't been all the rumours and leaks, because now it still feels like the system was announced two years ago lol, even though it was only officially announced a few days ago.
I wouldn't expect a price that low any time soon, but something like this could happen in a few years time.
These specs are really good for a mobile system.
