Who buys a PS3 to play PS2 games? Most likely people who buy a PS3 have a PS2 so what is the big deal? If you really are worried about the playing PS2 games on PS3 than spend the extra $100 or pull at your PS2 and play them.
I believe there "rush" to beat Sony has put them in lose this generation. UPS handles nearly 1.4 million a packages a month coming and going from Texas repair center. At $25 a pop a 3 way trip which totals $37 million a month in 360 shipping, plus labor, and a lost on each console mircosoft will be going over there billion dollar put away in no time.
Yes it not only plays DVD's it upscales them.
compare to the xbox $50 more you get a blu ray player and free online.
I also heard the lack of space on the DVD was giving them problems on the XBOX verison and they were delaying this game until M$ gets there new compression kit out. Plus a couple of months ago didn't Rockstar say GTA will move PS3 units?
I believe M$ pretty much failed in japan no matter hard they try. The original XBOX was lucky to sell 500 units a week mainly because it never had any games that catered to the Japan person. The other reason is they were quick to drop support of the XBOX. This only goes to show japanese the XBOX and M$ are very lost in the console business. I had my PS3 since lanuch and here is why. My 60Gb already has 40gb of free space with my picture, games, saved game, etc. Also the price of blu laser has come down in price, IBM has reported making smaller nm cell processors, and I'm sure the 40 Gb will only come with Spiderman 3 blu ray movie while the 80 Gb will come with Spiderman3, motorstorm/heavenly sword/warhawk?

This is a big blow to BLU Ray!! Last I check China is a communist country and the average China man pay is like $5 a day now they only need a month of working hard to buy a HD DVD player, and half a year for HD TV.
