Well, if it were my choice, I'd say go back to basics. Make a game similar to Mario 64, but put a tad more focus on the visual look of the game. We already know that Miyamoto and Nintendo have the gameplay down.
Better yet, you could do something akin to Sonic Generations and revisit a plethora of older Mario gameplay styles with the new graphics.

They're already doing that with NSMB2. Wouldn't you know all of the haters already got on their case just for "pulling a Capcom" even though Nintendo specifically pledged to 1) only make add-on content for one of the modes that isn't part of the main game and 2) never to work on said add-on content until they have released said game.
I can understand people being skeptical of the Wii U, especially after E3, but in all honesty I don't see what's there to hate about it. The launch window has quite a few games covering quite a few different genres. Fighting, strategy, racing, action/adventure, shooting, etc.
Or perhaps they just hated the Wii and that hatred translated over. Who knows.
Eh. As long as it has new survivors and some new features, I'm alright with a new Left 4 Dead game. Valve releases games only so often, so for me at least it's a pleasure to have a reason to support them again.

Oh give me a break. One of the reasons people are critical of Nintendo is because of their lack of third party support. Multiplatform games fall into that category.

You're expecting ports and launch titles to show what this machine is really capable of?
The PSX had better textures from what I saw. But the actual polygon count and bits used were greater on the 64. Had Nintendo not stuck with cartridges, they probably would have had a system that looked and palyed better than the PSX in all aspects and not just how modern the tech was.
Speaking of region locks, are you aware that Vita personal accounts are region locked?
Mario's original NES theme song had more of an impact than Bioshock's modern writing. I'd like to mention I love both games, but honestly, who would the average Joe have a greater chance of recognizing? The Mario theme or the story in Bioshock?

It's a stronger machine with a new control style. Plus both the 360 and PS3 were initially sold for higher prices than $299 (the same amount if you count the Xbox 360's core package which included more basic accessories and no HDD).
