I'm sorry, it's been 4 years 2 months 2 days since it was first released in Japan (11/11/2006).

Not quite a sound effect, but the "Battle Won" sound/music from all the Final Fantasy games.

The chirp of an actual Metroid.

Link's low health beep in Zelda games.

How can you compare MOTION capture by looking at STILL images?

Do they mean facial scanning/modeling?

Dumb "article".

compared to Terrance and Phillip maybe.

Everybody screaming "Death to hackers" like they were responsible for 9/11 or something.

They figured out how to hack a 5 year old game console. Every other console has already been hacked. Every console in the future will probably be hacked.

Where's the big outrage coming from?

Where's the same anger against MS and Apple since iTunes and Windows Media Player ask to "rip" a CD to MP3 as soon as you put a CD in yo...

@Shadow

So, a platform doesn't count if it offers $1 games?
I guess we should remove PCs as a valid platform too.

There are full length, full quality, full price games on iphone/android/windowsphone.

Don't dismiss it because it also happens to be a phone and/or you hate Apple.

I'm not talking about CFW.

I'm talking about a unmodified PS3 with a hacker-signed homebrew disk in it. They can't brick you for just inserting homebrew of any kind into the machine.

Here disable and ban are two different things.

Disable means actually bricking your console so that it no longer works at all. Can't play games, can't watch movies, can't even turn it on.

So, it would be ok for Dell to completely brick your Laptop if it ever found a bootleg copy of Excel on it?

Don't forget that these PS3s will NOT be modified/hacked, they are simply inserting a hacker-signed game.

Ban the console from PSN: Yes
Ban the PSN account: Yes
Brick the console: NO

Are they going to ban PS3s that have only played a homebrew disk, but never altered their console?

I doubt they could get away with banning a console if someone just puts a NES emulator disk in it. It would be like banning an iPod from iTunes if they detect that it had an MP3 that was copied from a friend.

What I don't get is that everyone keeps talking about Custom Firmware. I though you could just sign a game with the Key that was found and it would play.

So, I assume that meant someone could write an NES emulator with all the games on the disk, sign the code and it would play it on an unmodified system and the PS3 would never know it was any different from a retail disk. Isn't this the case?

They have a simple strategy:

Core: made by 3rd party (even if it's multi-plat)
Casual: made by MS and 3rd party

This will work well for them in USA, which is where their $$$ is anyway.

Here comes the Maytag fanboys damage control....

Yea, when he was out of ideas.
When he can take other people's ideas, then he's "Captain Hacker" again.

1) This was news in 2007, why are they bringing it up again now?

2) This has nothing to do with the slim model. My PS3 Fat does NOT have BC either. All PS3s after the MGS4 model (Aug 2007) have BC removed.

3) Now PS3 + PS2 costs LESS than a BC PS3 did.

but can you hack a computer by playing a word game?

Then you haven't played Angry Birds or Plants vs. Zombies on one.

@frostypants

I'm not an expert, but, technically yes, it's illegal. But no one I've ever known has been in trouble for having a bootleg copy of something (ask any iPod owner).
I believe in some cases you are allowed to backup your own possessions (then "lose" the original).
It's basically the same as your friend giving you a copy of some of his MP3s, you think the FBI is going to time and money checking people's DVD and Music coll...

You're missing the point. There is NO MODDED FIRMARE or MODCHIPS. He found a way to burn games so that they look 100% legit.

What are they gonna do if they catch you with a bootleg disk in your machine?
Ban the machine forever if it ever has a bootleg disk? (that won't happen since the machine has not been modified).
Ban the current account if they detect a bootleg disk? (that won't happen either, but it if does, create a new FREE account)
