Sadly I agree. I tried getting my 12 year old nephew to play this, but he just couldn't get past the outdated graphics, the clunky controls (I'd actually forgotten that you can't use the analogue stick for this game!), and the repetitive random battles that kept "interrupting" (his words) the game.
It's hard getting younger gamers to appreciate good retro games, because while we see our childhood and nostalgia....all they see is an old game with clunky...
It's not 'if I say so'. It's the truth. Nobody would claim a bike is the one winning bike races. Or that a boat is the one winning the rowing races. So it's baffling that people claim that it's the horses who are winning the dressage while the riders just sit around and look pretty. It's frustrating, as a horse rider, to hear people who know jack-shit about horse riding spread untruths about a sport that takes people DECADES to learn and master.

You sound like someone who knows little about horse riding and dressage. A horse is a 1000+ lb animal with a mind of its own. It takes years of training, skill, and athletic ability to get to the high level that the Olympic dressage riders are at. There's a reason many of the riders are in their late 30s, 40s, and even 50s....younger people simply don't have the experience or skill to be at an Olympic level.
The riders are extremely fit too. Just try riding quietly...
Japan is weird with things like censorship. They aren't as 'open' as a lot of game/anime sites like to portray. This is a country that will happily show an upskirt of an underage schoolgirl in a game, yet gets weird about showing two adults passionately kissing in a tv show. What is deemed acceptable for the censors, and what isn't, can be very confusing.

White is seen as 'neutral' because, historically, it has been white people who have been in charge of marketing departments and who started that whole 'white people appeal to the masses' belief. But even if racist/sexist people DIDN'T buy the game based solely on the cover, I doubt it would have much of an effect on sales. In the end, they're only hurting themselves by not buying a potentially good game based on the race or gender of the protagonist.

I hope they don't add too much from the spin offs tbh. Some of the additions from Dirge of Cerberus and Before Crisis in particular are downright terrible (e.g. Deep Ground Soldiers, the 'internet' Lifestream, AVALANCHE being founded decades before Barret was even born, Genesis being the catalyst that sent Sephiroth crazy in Nibelheim, Vincent's limit break being a WEAPON, etc) It doesn't add to the original story. Yeah it can kill...although it is usually only considered life-threatening to the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. It's rare for someone so young and presumably healthy to die from it.

MGS1 is actually pretty tame compared to the rest of the series. It has its crazy moments but it's nothing compared to MGS2 onwards! LOL
Yeah the world itself was gorgeous to look at. It's just a shame we couldn't explore it at all.

How could you tell if the levels are too large and there's too many collectibles if you only played 20 minutes of it? You would have barely been introduced to Gruntilda's castle, let alone anything past the first level (which is an intro level anyway).
