That was because it the PS3 was such a different architecture from the PS2. If the PS4 is based on the same technology as the PS3 then having backwards compatability wouldnt cost anything additional to manufacture.
The PS2 had a two year head start on the orginal xbox
They speak for Sony because they are chosen to be spokespersons for the company, so what comes out of their mouth is the offical company statement as decided by the PR division and as signed off by the board.
Some guy who works at Sony voicing an opinion is not the same - i would have thought the distinction between this person and Jack Tretton or Kaz Hirai is obvious.
people who play for trophies are no different to people who played through a previous MGS game to get the big boss emblem, or people who play through DMC to get an SS rating.
Its just an extra challenge within the game which you can show off to people and these kinds of things have existed way before trophies or achievements, so get off your little soapbox and accept that people will play games for whatever reason they want.

Im a PS3 fan but im not a Sony fan, i will go with whatever console i percieve to be best at the time.
Last generation i wasnt impressed with the PS2 and loved the original Xbox, prior to that i had an N64, SNES, C64, Spectrum 48K.....i could go on.
Anyone who just buys a console out of brand loyalty is an idiot, buy whatever is best and for me this gen it was the PS3. Next gen it might be Sony, MS, Nintendo, Onlive, Apple...i dont give a crap about the n...
I don't think Sonys next console needs to be anywhere near as big a leap in hardware as the PS2 to the PS3 was.
I think it will be a faster version of the Cell (it needs to be to keep backwards compatability with the PS3), more RAM, and a faster Blu-Ray drive.
So the bulk of the R&D is already done which will keep the costs of the system low.
Except MS have NOT increased their install base as a result of Kinect.
Around 20% of pre-existing xbox owners bought Kinect but the Xbox dint see a massive surge in sales as a result of brand new casual customers buying an xbox with Kinect.
So no, as far as swelling the xbox user base goes then Kinect did not suceed. As far as selling a lot of Kinect hardware then it definitley suceeded.
@JellyJelly - i have played it and i was quite surprised that it is pretty much the same as any other FPS game. Seems just like Borderlands mixed with Doom 3 to me and i think its pretty dissapointing.
