I was also at that event and it was awesome. Really intimate and uncrowded, and practically zero waiting times to play on all the big exclusives. They did a similar event when the vita launched.
Thats was the perfect template for how those kind of events should be run. The big shows are a complete farce.

It would only be pay to win if the "payed for" weapons were inherently better than the the regular ones, which they aren't.
Each weapon has a loadout cost, so bringing a more powerful weapon means you have to reduce something else, in this regard the game is very well balanced and definitely not pay to win.
