Even if the hardware is old, I doubt a custom chip like the Cell and other parts in the PS3 would let it drop to $99 at a profit. No sense at selling the PS3 at a loss now, a profitable 250gb model around $150-$200 could offset losses on the PS4 since its sold at a loss

Look, you could be absolutely right and someone clicked 6 instead of 5. But they also clicked 7 instead of 9 on the Vita thing in the same document. That would be two major errors by well-paid PR reps who draft up these technical writing things, technical writers who are paid 50k-100k to not make these errors. If you read the article it has links to Best Buy, Target, and TRU which have been selling it for $59 since launch. This also comes from the same document that leaked the rumor $20 Vita price cut too.

To be fair, MS kept saying "this won't happen" and then it did. They even say 8/10 XB1 owners use Kinect so those 2/10 probably would have preferred buying it at $400 without it if they could have.
A 500GB HDD is like, I dunno $30 to manufacture? The BR drive is maybe $30 or so too and that's without Sony's big contract discounts with suppliers probably. I'd wager that a discless/hdd-less PS4 would only take off about $100 off costs at most, not $200 or $300. I'd say a subsidized model with a contract is a better move than that.
I agree with the popular sentiment here, no need for a price cut like the author argues. Maybe throw in the camera or an extra controller/game but don't go crazy
