Nintendo caters to all gamers. That has always been their position. Make something that appeals to as many people as possible.
That is why they have so much success. Just targeting 1 group is why Vita isn't have so much success.
I've met quite a few hardcore Sony fans who chose the 3DS over Vita.
Actually, I think the DS is now the highest selling game machine in existence and the 3DS has been the highest selling game machine for over a year.

The most likely reason is because Nintendo doesn't wipe developers rectums with money the way Sony and Microsoft do. Many devs have gotten used to having their palms greased, and on Nintendo hardware its sink or swim by your own hand.

Bayonetta 2 may be the Wii U's first million seller because its the only 3rd party game being developed from the ground up for the console exclusively that people actually want.
Even some of the biggest Wii U detractors I personally know they would get one just for Bayonetta 2 and Smash Brothers.

Wonderful 101 had next to no promotion and only 30,000 copies were shipped. It wasn't suppose to sell Million. It wasn't even supposed to sale 50,000.
Only posting the number without the context paints a different picture from reality. Its an experimental franchise.
And I can get a 300 Wii U and hook up my 2TB external hardrive to play Pikmin 3, Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate, Bayonetta 2 when that comes and Monlith's X when that comesout.
I'm not the least bit envious.
