While I do think Sony has done a lot right I'd have to say they are mostly doing so well due to their competitions own incompetence.
The wiiu (I own 1 by the way) was a near still birth of a product. It's based on a concept that doesn't really work beyond much more than novelty, lacks the mass market appeal of it's predecessor, has been poorly marketed, and lacks the diversity of software to attract a wider audience of gamers.

After only 7 months I have; a new killzone, a new infamous, the highly underrated knack, a new stider, resogun, outlast, child of light, the best/definative versions of flower, pixel junk shooter 1-2, dead nation, tomb raider, trine 2, etc
and there is a steady flow of great content. in the next year or so I'll have-
valiant heart, swapper, oddworld, ...

Not sure about catch up per say but they definitely made steps to undo some of the negative pr that helped Sony get the lead they have. And Sony didn't leverage their lead very well if you ask me.
Personally I'd say Microsoft had a solid but very conservative/safe e3 presentation with the typical halo, forza, cod, ass creed, etc.. All great games but a little low on the wow factor. Sunset looks good but after fuze and the last few ratchets I'll take a wait and see...

A 'final blow' implies they have been dominating and will now finish off the competition. Seeing as they are significantly behind, at this point they'd be lucky to 'land a good blow' or go 'blow for blow' with Sony, implying they might level the playing field with a good E3.

head on over to digital foundry and check it out for yourself every single multiplat Xbox one game has been inferior and in some cases by a pretty wide margin. it is a really nice machine but it is technically inferior hardware and should cost less then a ps4.
I also personally think the difference does not mean that much to the average consumer but that does not mean there is not a difference because there is.

Even with the move to separate from kinect, and it was a very necessary/good move to make given sales, they still have major problems going ahead.
No matter what they do they are stuck with the original hardware design; a machine which was intended to offer a more 'balanced' approach to games, media, kinect functionality, etc.
