@Flat: And that's fine. If you're willing to miss out, having both devices is a perfect compromise. What I'm concerned about is two things:
1) Smartphone hipsters acting like consoles are no longer necessary.
2) An industry that knows nothing about games acting like they know something about games. The inherent flaw with the "app" mentality is that, yes, ANYONE can design and publish a game. That literally means ANYONE. So, all the ...
But I don't see that list of games coming to phones effectively. Half of the games you listed are multiplayer. How does that work with your phone? Does your phone have a "hard mute" that prevents you from receiving phone calls during the game? Is there a pop up on the game screen that tells you that you have a phone call? Fine. If its important, be prepared to drop online multiplayer when that happens. You can't suspend a multiplayer game. I don't think people ar...
I agree with nearly everything you said: except that cell phone games are "free". You're forgetting the "hidden" costs of operation that do not come with full console or handheld consoles. Namely, that to even maintain the phone you have to pay 30+ extra dollars per MONTH for a data plan. Most carriers demand that you have the data plan to have a smartphone, and let's be honest they're pretty pointless without one. That 30 dollars per month adds up fast, u...
Probably because game developers aren't usually trained in story telling and are normal human beings.
@droid: I have no problems with angry birds or games like that. Many people like them. More power to 'em. It isn't my business to tell people what they should like.
What bothers me is when casual gamers act like they have something "figured out" about game that hardcore gamers don't. They are free to have their preference, but when they start acting like casual games are somehow better than other games and that hardcore gamers are somehow stupid jus...
Actually, its because they've spent a lot of time figuring out which games don't challenge them, are repetitive, and a waste of their time. We figured it out early on through the internet because the games you can play on an iPhone are pretty much the exact same games you could play on a PC in the early and mid 90s, only portable and with a graphical overhaul.
Casual gamers play those games because they need a time killer, yet THEY are completely ignorant of the hist...
That makes sense, when you talk about a specific subset of gamers: people that own smartphones AND consoles at home. And those people own BOTH and have been "hurt by the economy"? That seems like an awful lot of disposable income for people who have been "hurt by the economy". When I think of "hurt by the economy" I think of people losing their mortgages, not "ONLY being able to afford a smartphone AND a console".
I own ONE console:...
You're absolutely correct resistance, we SHOULDN'T be comparing the two. They are two different markets and they can both exist. Bubble for you.
I'm not intending to continue this tired rhetoric, but as long as the pro-smartphone fanboys keep getting in my face and judging me just because I like different gaming experiences than them, I'm going to defend myself.
To the pro-smartphone crowd that says "I can get a game for 99 cents, so why would I drop 40 dollars on a cartridge game" here is why:
Let's give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you got the best possible deal by getting your smartphone FREE with a two year contract.
What the smartphone crowd conveniently ignores when they quote the one dollar price tag is that they are required to pay an extra 30 dollars per month (minimally) for a data ...
I just had a long, tiresome PM discussion with a very unkind anti-handheld person that thinks I'm an idiot of the world for supporting gaming handhelds. I should have blocked and ignored a lot earlier than I did.
This article is based off of a stock photo released to support a rumor. Its pointless to debate it.
Yeah, its really light on RPGS right now.
Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars is one of the best launch titles. If you liked Advanced Wars or turn-based grid combat it is a great game. Samurai Warriors:Chronicles was really unfairly reviewed due to it being a launch title, in my opinion. IGN wrote a particularly moronic review of it in which the reviewer clearly had not spent enough time with the game to "get" it. It is a button masher, but you control four "generals&...
Well said Highlife. There are many gamers who depend on handhelds to be able to game. Businesses should just ignore that market simply because some gamers have other preferences? Last I checked, 4 MILLION 3DS' have been sold in the US alone. That seems like a pretty big market to me and it would be fiscally irresponsible to ignore it. Or should the gaming preferences of 4 million people be ignored, just because you don't game with handhelds KZA? Have a little empathy for gamers ...
If you only think there are two good 3DS games than you probably either haven't done much research into the library (writing off titles you probably shouldn't) or have really high standards as a porty gamer.
Yeah, I get that. I tested the buttons too and I wasn't impressed. Doesn't feel right. My 3DS controls feel better. Analog sticks make a world of difference.
And to support AdvanceWarsSgt's comments, my microwave has a clock, but it doesn't make my alarm clock obsolete. I still need my alarm clock. A device possessing a feature doesn't make that device the new future unless it can do things better for the circumstances. I have yet to see a jack-of-a...
Once again Level, we have an empathy problem with your arguments.
I own one television and I have a spouse who likes certain entertainment that is different from mine. I play my handheld AT HOME while she watches what she wants to watch.
You see, there are logical reasons for people to not own consoles and own handhelds.
I need a gaming experience that allows me to be near my spouse but also game with depth. Hence, I've chosen a handh...
Raiinstorm81 has illuminated the problem with your point Level, and you could be looking at this at a different level of analysis. The crux of your argument is that hardware is the key, which may be true, but you ignore the fact that you're pushing hardware that is jack-of-all-trades and master of none.
You may be able to play a Steam game on any system but the common thread is that all of those systems have to be CAPABLE to play those steam games.
Phone...
@Advance: Normally I agree with you but LND and I have continued the conversation on PM and it is polite conversation. I don't interpret his comments as blatant trolling.
But 3D is not the only difference. The 3DS quadrupled the card memory of the DSi with a processor better than a Wii console.
If "cosmetic" is necessary for you to see a new console then there is probably nothing that will convince you edgewise.
@Flat: Yep, we agree, I was just adding some thoughts...;)
