Killzone is technically more impressive in terms of many aspects than either of the games mentioned. i agree that they do need to go back to the drawing board. But not just for ideas on where to take the franchise, but as to what else they could produce.
I personally would love for them to make a new franchise, no milking it to it's increasingly close demise. A blank canvas without limitations. No need to ruin characters any further, no need to lose sight of what a series of games were about.

What you're failing to consider is the overall size of the game. View the videos again and look at the destructibility and scope whilst the helicopter is flying around. This game is looking like an Urban warhawk (graphically not gameplay).
These things have to be considered. What speed is the frame rate. How much is going on - on the screen.
I'd like you to name a game with the verticality, scope, amount of players in the game with better graphics.
Since when does gameplay have to be completely new to be a good game.
The Uncharted series mixed together elements of platforming and cover based third person shooting mechanics which worked really well. This was combined with a cinematic story and characters that you couldn't help but click with, much like Max Payne had. The fact the graphics are still a pleasure to view merely brings this together as one sweet package nicely wrapped in a bow of graphical wonder.

You should pick it up, you can get it for pretty cheap now and have the chance to get the bundled maps at a lower price. The game is brilliant. There are still plenty of people playing the game day in, day out.
I think it's a great game, one of the most balanced games online.

That's all very well that yes we may be able to press the pause menu which is unrealistic and restart a race, but by doing so you are punished with the task of having to start all over again.

The game still has a fairly solid community. I still play it quite alot. It wasn't a launch title though. It was out in under a year of US and Jap release. and just over 6 months from EU release.
Warhawk is still a brilliant experience and I believe it's somewhat this way because it's not completely matchmaking based. (I can't stand it)

I've got to admit that the game shocked me. I'm really enjoying it. The WWe universe mode is actually keeping me playing with superstars that I would never normally use, just because the match is already made.
The road to wrestlemania had points where I was actually laughing, which is a rare thing when playing a game.
I do wish that they could sort out some of the issues such as superstars being able to reverse a pin after a finisher ?? That's str...
