Plain and simple.
Yes consoles do break. I had to fix my PS2's DRE myself (pretty simple fix). But there is a huge difference between "things break" and "things keep breaking all of the time".
A massive recall might have killed the Xbox360 in its infancy though, so maybe M$ made the right move... for M$

This round, PS3 had brand new technology like blu ray drives and the cell processor so it had to be expensive.
If Ken Kutaragi or whatever his name is was still in charge, then you might have another expensive system. He was an inventor, innovator, and engineer first. Business savvy he was not.

DRE and no progressive scan... but people bought it for games with the bonus of watching movies.
I always thought VHS would be good enough for me, until I bought my PS2 and borrowed a DVD from a friend. It was all over after that :)
With PS3, I work with people who only bought ther PS3's as blu-ray players (the best one for the money).
$60 - $100+ for M$'s own 20gb hdd is a slap in the face of people who already decided to buy the 360.
I got my PS3 a 160gb hdd for under $100
Unfortunately, in trying to save some money on an Arcade purchase, those people will probably end up spending more.
I feel for the people who can only afford the Arcade unit. Some people aren't fanboys; they just buy whatever system they can afford.

One.... just plain old preference. Some like it, some don't. Some like how 1st person helps heighten the immersion by putting you "in the game." Other like a 3rd person view that allows them to see more of their surroundings...
Reason Two (and unfortunately my f'd up reason): motion sickness. Since Doom, I love 1st person games - but they don't love me. Unless I'm downing dramamine, after a little while I start to get head-aces, upset stomach, and nausea. Granted...
I would buy an arcade 360 and no motherf'n games just send him f'd up messages everyday.

Of course 360 will survive after the holidays. I'm a PS3 fanboy and I'll be getting one.
M$ is going all out trying to gain market share, and that competition leads to some good pricing. I still think M$ has one more good price drop left in them though.
With all of the good PS3 games coming out this fall, I can wait for a price drop for a Premium or Elite. Or wait ...
