MS did not always have a stage show at Gamescom. Europe never really was a focus in the 360 era. It is now though because thr gap is so large. Sony will have a conference at Paris Games Week, TGS and possibly PSX. No MS at these events.
You do know that Sony's conference will be at Paris Games Week right? Will MS not having one here hurt them? Here's one ... MS has little or no presence at TGS and how about their own PSX? Sony has more conferences and briefings throughout the year, not to mention twice as much floor space at Gamescom. MS didn't always have a Gamescom conference you know? It may boost sales in that week or month, but Europe is Sony land. In some places sales are 3:1 and 4:1 in favour of PS4.

The PS4 will soon have little competition too. Yes the UK and US are still strong MS markets, but Sony still lead in sales with less first party and being at a higher price. These markets are also the most price sensitive. When these changes come to the PS4 sales will increase further when MS would already have taken these steps.

The PS4 is Sony's longest stint without a price drop, yet it's outpacing the competition in every single market. The console also still has it's massive first party titles to drop this gen. The competition has dropped price multiple times, released a lot of brand loyalty type games and still the gap widens.

This is good news. Will wait to see though. MS basically invented the content first, timed exclusives, DLC and marketing deals models. They did this throughout the 360 era to supplement the lack of first party. Any steps to reduce third party deals is a good one.

China Joy is happening now. Paris game week is a smaller event, like Eurogamer.I usually attend the latter and also Gamescom. Sitting them out this year. At both events Sony floor presence usually dwarfs the others too.
Europe is Sony's territory. Sales in some parts are 4:1. Europe is the reason for the massive world wide gap. This will help MS in the short term in the UK, but remember Sony will be at Paris Games Week, TGS, China Joy and possibly another PSX. Exclusives will be shown at most of these events too. Let's see if GB writes anything about that.

Financials seem pretty good, even from a company wide perspective, when you consider where they were a couple of years back. Given these results I can't see a price cut this year, despite the improvements in performance I doubt Sony would turn down $500 million or so extra just to pursue more market share when they're already so dominant. No point in wasting too much money on the US market either, doesn't matter whether they're ahead of Xbox there or not, when worldwide sales ...

Imagine if MS didn't change it's policies and reduce the price? Sales would be far lower. Most of this is in the US and UK (MS strongest markets), but even in those they are getting outsold.
This holiday will be good for them. Just wish they did more throughout the year and focus more on worldwide appeal.
