They won't just have to run on One X; they have to run on the Original Xbox One as well. And I agree that this will be a big problem. Although practically speaking I think it won't provide PS5 with the advantage that it could, because during that period there will probably only be a small handful of high-caliber PS5 exclusive games that really show off that console, while the majority of games are still going to be hampered by a last gen version.

Meanwhile, we'l...

Yeah although I think people always overestimate the "install base" factor when releasing on old systems after new ones come out. All the enthusiastic people move over to the new platform and are looking for things to buy, while the people who remain tend towards the established annual franchises. Gran Turismo 6's significantly diminished sales compared to Grab Turismo 5, despite a much larger install base of PS3s, is a good example of this. As is 2K's scramble to get Border...

Eh. I mean no matter what, unless they are doing two different versions of the game, everything is going to be inherently held back by the PS4. I mean I'm sure they're going to optimize the PS5 version graphically in many ways, and maybe they'll be able to eliminate loading screens in that version, but it's not like they can change the designs of levels on the basis of the PS5's SSD (as some devs are suggesting will be possible), because even if they're graphically dow...

Wait, you need Xbox Live or PS Plus to play an online game? That's a totally unexpected requirement that has no precedent.

I love that all the "I'm such a hardcore, old school gamer (look, I mentioned Morrowind!)" people on here are apparently incapable of refraining from using an optional feature in games that they claim ruins the experience. I mean I'm fine with SP not having waypoints in GoT, but if I don't like the waypoint system in a game because it is too over the top--or any optional feature for that matter--I just don't use it.

If these people were really old ...

Why dredge up painful memories like that? Haha

Can't wait to read all the nonsensical "they're holding it back for PS5, because that makes sense" opinions.

I never would have before, but now I kind of want to make it a thing.

Yeah I mean I'm sure if the execs there heard me complaining, they'd be like, " come on, we just bought Insomniac basically to target people like you," and they'd be right.

I think people are really overreading my comment as legitimate corporate advice rather than just seeing at as a "wouldn't it have been cool if they bought a console-focused studio."

Yeah I've had that exact autocorrect typo when using my phone, so I knew that's what you meant. But then I again, I would live if the bought Level 5 or TriAce. So your statement was factually correct.

Oh yeah, for sure. And it very well could be a wise investment-I know very little about the mobile game market in China. It's possible this will result in far more profit with far less effort than a PlayStation-related investment would. I'm saying it's frustrating from a perspective of someone who wants to see more high quality console games; I don't own Sony stock, so as an investor it's possible I'd have a different view.

I get that this is a Sony acquisition and not a PlayStation specific acquisition, but it is still super frustrating to think about all the great ways that money could have been used instead of buying a tiny share of a mobile games studio.

"what more people considered the better controller"

That must be why Xbox's best selling console tied with the lowest selling PlayStation, despite being a year earlier to market and having the entire gaming media acting as their marketing arm for the first two years the consoles competed.

People on PC use Xbox controllers because MS was more open with native steam compatibility way sooner. I used to use software to trick games into thinking ...

There is a lot of ignoring widely available and well-publicized information, then getting angry about not being aware of that information, that goes on among a certain segment of game purchasers.

It's funny because they have been talking about this for years, basically since the announcement. I've never played a final fantasy game and don't follow the series, but I was well aware of this just from generally being aware of PlayStation related news.

Haha love everyone taking this so seriously. It's obvious the two companies have been refining their controllers based on the other company's design for the past three generations. The Xbox 360 controller is basically a midpoint between a Dualshock 2 and the OG Xbox controller, and then the Dualshock 4 was basically a midpoint between the Dualshock 3 and the 360 controller. Now this looks like a midpoint between the Xbox One controller and the Dualshock 4.

Yeah. Good thing there are so many devs making superior open world first person western RPGs. There are so many great games in that genre that I forget Bethesda exists.

As the article notes, this direction wouldn't really provide any interesting conflicts. Best case scenario would be to go in the direction of things like Paradise Lost and incorporate archangels, etc. On the other hand, Diablo already exists. Then there are the four horsemen of the apocalypse, but there's already a series of games based around them.

Even setting aside the political reasons they wouldn't want to go this direction, it just doesn't seem like i...

We're going to look back at this as the point when the "we need discs" crowd stopped being a quaint, harmless remnant of a bygone era, and actually turned into a legitimate problem holding up the entire medium.

If Last of Us 2 was a PC exclusive game, this delay would not have happened. It just would have been released on Steam on time.
