It is possible that the FW update will be downloadable like on the 360. Download and burn to disc at friend or library and then bring home.

I agree 100% with you. The entire reason for the 24h check was to ensure you owned your physical copy still and hadn't sold it to gamestop. I do still wish we didn't need the disc in the drive but I guess you can't have everything. It was reasonable to me because I gained the benefit of all these rights as though my game were purchased digitally except that I personally prefer buying physical discs. I would say taking Sony down from #1 to neck in neck is a major accomplishment. worldwide PS3 and 360 are 70 million each. gen before that, sony was 140 million. so who lost?
All I've learned from this whole thing is the large amount of people that don't actually read anything official and just read internet comments and if the comment agrees with how they are originally biased, they take the comment as fact regardless of the truth.

Actually they're building cloud-enabled games so that if the cloud is not available it isn't 'you can't play your game' which is just people jumping to conclusions. If the cloud isn't available, then the developer can opt to do something like implement a less computationally intensive version locally, or perhaps worst case, just skip that part of the computations. It's not the end of the world as you would love people to believe.

distributed computing and cloud computing are two different things. similar but different. And PCs have been doing it for years prior to the PS3, it's nothing special, any device can do it as long as the software is available for it and it has an internet connection. Even can do it on your android smartphone.
I think this rumour started from the actual statement they made that if your friend was playing your game, your friend's xbox would do a digital check-in every 1 hour to ensure that you're still online so that they can continue playing it.
I think some idiot got it mixed up accidentally or on purpose to start the rumour mill up again.
