That's good info. Can you give me a link so I can archive it?
They were thinking they could sell it for less?
Now don't get me wrong. I think the core/arcade is a bad idea too, but it's not irrational.
Edit: ouch you changed your comment on me. If you change "discount" to "discontinue" then I would have to agree with you 100%.
Some of you may be too young to remember, but it took the DVD almost five years before it achieved mass market penetration. DVD players were still relatively exotic when the PS2 came out in 2000. It all boils down to price.
I don't think it will take as long for bluray to gain wide market acceptance. But I don't think it will live as long as the DVD either. DVD specs were finalized in 1995, so if you consider 2008 the end of the DVD era and the dawn of bluray, DVD reigned for 1...
That's so not true. Different types of businesses use different methods of cost accounting, which affects when a sale is "recorded" on the ledger and/or reported to the government for sales tax purposes. Even within the same industry "recorded sales" can mean different things among sellers, depending on how they choose to count things.
Anyway Deeznuts is correct. I've commented on the same thing before so I won't repeat myself.
Let's try again. Slowly.
(Step 1) There won't be a game that can't be configured to install and run from a hard drive. (Step 2) And a hard drive doesn't care if it's fed from a single BDrom or a bunch of DVDs. (Step 3) Every PS3 has a harddrive. (Step 4) That is why PS3 games don't need BDrom.
Show me a fella who says it's impossible for something like Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, GT5 or Killzone 2 to run from a hardrive, and I will show you the world's biggest j...
I meant that the phrase "only possible on blu-ray" was a company line, a promotional slogan that actually meant nothing in practical terms, but was repeatedly stated in public for the sole purpose of advancing the cause of the bluray format. Now that the ultimate goal of the PR campaign that gave birth to the slogan has been achieved (bluray won) you may never hear a developer utter those words again.
Before you go into a knee jerk defensive reaction, think carefully....
There are people on this forum that still earnestly believe blu-ray was built into the PS3 because it was absolutely necessary for gaming. Now that blu-ray has won the format war, don't be surprised if you never again hear a developer say "this game is only possible on blu-ray."
Nobody will believe you read scholarly articles. Not after reading what you wrote here. I don't. You wouldn't recognize a real academic if you engaged one in a written argument on-line.
While you may not have stated it explicitly, you are in fact fazed by multi-syllabic words. It's plain from your reaction that they aren't part of your usual vocabulary. This may come as a shock to you, but there are circles where words like "rudimentary" aren't reserved for formal s...
Sushi, you talk as if patriotism and nationalism are bad things. If this means your country and your nation aren't good enough for you to love, then I feel sorry for you.
Digital downloads will not supplant physical media completely. The two will co-exist. But there are certain uses for which downloads are simply a more efficient means of delivering content. The movie rental business is the prime example.
The problem with the article is that the author isn't "plugged in" and isn't up to speed with current trends in technology, so he isn't aware of developments that are already on the verge of implementation. For example, with HDi inte...
To "slant" as it is generally understood, means to interpret or present something in line with a special interest, which usually means an unstated agenda. When you accuse a writer of slanting his piece, it implies an unfair attempt to manipulate the reader's opinion for purposes other than communicating the honest truth. It's not slanting when the writer's conclusions are logically dictated by the findings from his/her reasonably thorough research and/or investigation.
Whether Sony will recoup its investment depends on how long blu-ray lasts as a medium. It may or may not last as long as DVD depending on how quickly the technology behind the transmission and storage of digital downloads matures.
That's just calling a spade a spade.
Everything you quoted from the article is true. The writer did his research, and every conclusion stated is supported by figures or quotes directly attributed to named sources. This is the business section of a mainstream paper after all, not a gamer blog. Why don't you try submitting a resume to one of these places and see how far you get? If the article doesn't make Sony look good then perhaps its because the truth doesn't make Sony look g...
There is a fine line between a proper Gamer Zone comment and Open Zone junk. I don't think you intended it but your comment is actually relevant to the discussion of the article. All those fancy stats don't mean squat if you are in last place in sales, regardless of the reason. If your audience is made up of developers, they won't be so pumped up to make yours the lead platform for development when it is being outsold world-wide by the competition.
You are correct sir. GDC is not the traditional venue for announcing new games to the public. But seeing how well Sony used last year's GDC to announce LBP and Home, MS took a cue from that playbook and made these announcements in an effort to counter Sony's recent momentum. MS knows they have to generate some excitement to prevent the PS3 from monopolizing the positive buzz.
Still, if this is all they have it's not looking too great. It's not a bad line-up but MS needs much mo...
@ Packet:
MS is not building up its internal game development capacity anymore because they do not have the corporate culture to do it well and they know it. They let Bungie go for that very reason. They also closed down Digital Anvil, Fasa, Beep, Studio Gigante etc. because MS had to face up to the fact that they could not develop good games in-house no matter how much money they throw at their studios (i.e. Rare).
MS' current approach is to outsource developmen...
@SSCOOLCHEA
It's not exactly a need to pick sides but, more accurately, a need to "self-identify." Humans are social animals and have a clannish tendency to define themselves according to the groups to which they belong. It comes from a primitive urge left over from when we were still apes, similar to the pack instinct you see in wolves and some dogs. It's not necessarily a bad thing. At its most advanced state of evolution it gives rise to family ties, the sense of ...
People don't realize this, but MS also stands to gain from the mass adoption of blu-ray. The BD-rom standard requires mandatory support for the VC1 video codec, which was developed primarily by MS, so MS will also participate in BD-rom royalties as a member of the patent pool. Studios can avoid paying MS more royalties by encoding in MPEG4, but a lot of releases will use VC1 because playback is already natively supported by Windows Vista.
MS screwed up but let's keep things fair and objective in the Gamer Zone. This article and the earlier article about Square Trade both deal with the "initial revision" of the 360, and there is even a quote from Square Trade stating that "[I]t’s highly unlikely any modified 360s were included in our report." This would seem to indicate that the additional heatsinks and other improvements have much reduced the frequency of rrod failures. Unfortunately, MS sold millions of &q...
It wasn't irrational two years ago when it first came out (though even then I thought it was a bad idea), but keeping it around now definitely is.
