The PS2 has won. Nobody here is going to dispute that. It's already part of history. In fact, now that the 40 gb PS3 no longer has bc, PS2 sales may continue to remain high.

So, how exactly does this help the PS3?

That's not going to happen. MS will not integrate an HD format into the 360 until an industry consensus format emerges, and HD televisions achieve deeper market penetration.

Even after a 79% drop, Halo 3 is second only to the PS2 version of FIFA in overall units sold. Do a little more searching on the web, and you'll find that the 360 version of FIFA, which is not even the bestselling 360 game, is far outselling the PS3 version. And the PS2 version of FIFA will not be playable on the 40 gb PS3s.

So what are you PS3 fans so happy about anyway?

EDIT: bruiser81:

It means the great lot of people that just bought FIFA for t...

Dude, the 80 gb model or whatever it is will get cheaper eventually. Sony is not going to stop producing the motherboards that have the BC silicon. So do what I, and maybe a gazillion other people are doing - just wait. If you have a 360 just stick to that until the PS3 library grows a bit more. By Xmas the 40 gb model will have less than 10 exclusives worth playing, so there's no big rush to get one yet. The heavy hitters on the PS3 won't be showing up until at least next spring. Remember, i...

XBOX 1 backwards compatibility on the 360 is pure software emulation that does not require any hardware assistance outside of the triple-core CPU to work. But additional code has to be written specifically for each title that gets BC treatment (hence, the MS BC list gradually grew with periodic updates, while the Sony list was suddenly all there). I don't see why the cell processor can't achieve the same feat with code specifically written for each game. I'm not saying it will happen. All I'm...

It didn't take long for my excitement over the 40 gb model to die down. Now I think I can wait another 5 or 6 months to see if the non-gimped models drop in price. By then I can probably get Ratchet and Uncharted for $40 or less, and there will be more games worth playing. I would encourage everybody else to buy Ratchet and Uncharted, then as soon as you are done trade it in at the store. Nothing would please me more than to have more used copies available on the cheap when I finally get arou...

Guys, think, even for a second, just THINK. You are a developer working for Microsoft. You hate Microsoft as much as this guy says you do. You are "eager" to leave Microsoft. You are sick of Halo. So what you do?

a) Quit, not in a year, but NOW and set up your own shop, have nothing further do with either Halo or Microsoft; or

b) Negotiate with MS for a year so that you can form an independent studio in which MS still retains an equity interest, while c...

Ha ha ha! FunkySolo is a big fat liar and everybody that actually played Halo 3 (about 2 million & counting - more than the entire population of Manhattan) knows it! At least most of the poserfags on this site read up on Halo 3 before trying wipe their leaky vags on it, but you, FunkySolo, are the new queen of Stupid Island; long live Queen Funkysolo! If you actually played the game you would know the black bars show up in only one particular situation, which has something to do with the ...

Man, chill out. In any creative business, nothing good ever comes out of forcing somebody to do anything that they aren't completely into, because no amount of threats or money can buy inspiration. Microsoft learned that the hard way when they bought RARE. Those dorks cranked out nothing but insipid rubbish to fullfill the letter of their contracts, then bailed as soon as their restrictive clauses expired, along with all the money MS paid them. So instead of trying to tie creative minds down ...

We don't have to wait that long. You were wrong even before you clicked the add comment button. This little snippet came from O'Connor's interview with GameDailyBiz:

BIZ: Has Bungie grown tired of the Halo universe? Will there be a Halo 4 from Bungie?

FO: No. We love the Halo universe and still have projects going on within it, like the Peter Jackson collaboration and dowloadable content. If we ever return to the Halo universe, I'm sure we'd have cool stories to ...

I'm not disagreeing or agreeing with this review because I didn't bother to read it. I'm just wondering how useful a review from an obscure website can be when it's this late. On the night before launch day this could have been interesting. But now that 2 million people already own the game, this review is just opinion # 2,000,001. It may as well be a forum post. What's the freakin point?

I'm late, but let me join those calling you an idiot. I'll take it back if the NPD figures say otherwise.

I think the Sony spokesman just screwed up.

If this statement is not corrected, it ought to stampede a lot of people into buying up the remaining stock of 60gb models under the impression that these would be the last models with backcompat, much like the way the clearance sale on 20gb models did a few weeks back. This should create an impressive sales spike for Sony to crow about. Should Sony later reintroduce a model with backcompat, either with a new SKU or a software soluti...

Man, this isn't bad news. I don't see the downside. MS just doesn't like owning devs anymore. It hasn't worked out too well for them. MS and Bungie are still tight. Bungie will give MS first dibs on the good stuff. What are you worried about?

@segasage

That's a good point, and something I missed honestly. The so-called "millions" of loyal PS2 owners that are still waiting to upgrade are the ones that couldn't afford the 60gb model. Also include those people that are still buying PS2s today. This new SKU will do nothing to speed up their conversion.

6826d ago 0 agree1 disagreeView comment

Dude, if you care about it that badly, spend the extra dough and score the 60gb model. This is a non-issue. Some of us just want a cheap PS3.

@ jlytle1234

I think you're right, but remember how Sony used to say that PS3 would be ok even without new games because of all those PS2 games already out? Turns out that's yet another bogus claim, as Sony itself has now admitted backcompat wasn't that big a deal after all.
