Sony didn't try, they succeeded.
They are the only console which has the ability to play BluRays and offer services such as Netflix, Lovefilm and other film and music streaming services without a need of a Sony membership.
The key difference is, MS is bragging about these things like it has never been done before and is something new and great. Similar to how Apple brags about new services of offer when it has been on Android as standard for years.
Between Destiny, Defiance and Dust 514, there seems to be a lot of these sci-fi shooters coming out this year; all with their own unique twist and gameplay styles and settings.

The gameplay videos I've seen remind me a lot of a toned down version of Vanquish but without the crazy Japanese style and humour.

Looks like Gabe has put some amount of money into Steam boxes (all the different variations) and is now worried he may not make the money back.
Wonder how much capital has been invested in regards to R&D costs and manufacturing. I know it's not entirely financed by Valve, but it must be part financed by them. No company would create hardware for nothing without a partnership or some form of backing from a software provider.

Heavy Rain, Insomniac games, Fat princess and many others have come from contractual agreements/ 2nd party devs or part financing / partnerships.
MGS4 was neither of the above. It was a AAA Exclusive similar to Gears where a dev specially made a game exclusively for a developer.
I could understand characters being locked, but this is an entire mode that can't be accessed until the developer launched a patch for update and or DLC. It's okay in a way since it's free, but it should have been available from launch as part of the game without the need to update etc.
