Yep, because of achievements I now go back and play games I like on the hardest difficulty and try to get any achievements I can. Heck I played Mass Effect 4 times just to get to 1000. It was a joy I would not have considered if there had not been the achievement\goals out there for me to shoot for. And when I dont like a game, the achievements do not compel me to finish playing it, nor do I bother with achievements (such as the multiplayer ones) that I have zero interest in.
I was very interested in UT3...however the lack of any significant single player has greatly muted my interest. I am not even sure its a bargin bin buy for me anymore.
Star Trek the Next Generation did not carry on the story of the original Star Trek characters (nor did DS9, Voyagers or Enterprise). Stargate Atlantis does not carry on the story of classic SG-1. Highlander the series did not carry on Connor Mclouds story. Yet these are all franchises. It is not necessary for the story to center on the same main character, just that it happens in the same created universe.
Good list.
Best story though, I dont know. I liked the Bioshock story but I am a big scifi fan and Mass Effect had a story that really engaged me. Bioshock I have only played once (though I guess I should go back and play it again). Mass Effect is the first game since COD2 that I went to the trouble to get all 1000 achievement points on (requiring me to play the game mulitple times...doesnt have multiplayer though so that helps, I never bother with those achievements...and no timed m...
I hated the combat at first too, then I started to actually think about what I was doing and realized it was actually quite good. Some people have issues with the thinking and just want to mindlessly shoot, thats not going to work. It is also critical to level up and set your team up with the correct equipment...this is not uncommon in RPGs.
Meh, All-Pro Football was worse then any of those on their "worst" list.
Bioshock is as much a franchise as uncharted or Mass Effect. All three are new IPs. All franchises develop from new IPs. At one time Halo was just a one hit game, so was Mario, so was MGS but they all developed into franchises.
Hmmmm, Mr Thompson would you kindly craw back into your hole of a life and leave video games alone.
demolitionX,
Right, god forbid anyone should actually have fun with a game console.
I would not think of NY Times as my choice of video game journalism either but this was a good article.
Fair list but COD4 should be much higher.
Terrible list IMHO.
I was going to say they missed a few but I see these are Australian release dates, so maybe not.
Some more I will take look at in the first two months (if they show).
Kingdom Under Fire (previous one was decent)
Dark Messiah (I am going to hold out hope it will be a decent WRPG)
Lost Odyssey
and WTH happen to Chronicals of Riddick remake?
There is no beating little girls with wrenches anywhere in the game.
Although the little girl does screem "kill him" to her protector a lot, basically you only fight the "big daddy". Once the big daddy is down you have the option to save or not save (or just differently save depending on your philosophy of what little sisters are and your opinion of euthenashia). In any case the choice is a one button push and a short cutscene where no wrench beating takes...
Not really impressed with the list.
And should PS2, DS and even PC items really be on the "next gen" list. I mean normally that means the next generation of consoles i.e. PS3, 360, wii. PC is almost Always next next gen - its always a few steps ahead of the consol and the PS2 and DS arent they last generation console\handheld?
Much better then their most anticipated list. Hard to argue with the choices here. Though didnt Rainbow 6 come out this year, I may have picked that above GRAW2...maybe.. I really did like GRAW2 but RB6 has a better following online.
Meh, not that impressed with the list.
I would say for me of those listed I am definitly looking forward too:
Fallout3
Burnout Paradise
Star Wars: FU
Maybes are
GTA - never played the series before
Soul Calibur - never bothered to finish the first one
Resident Evil - never played the series before.
I will be curious to see how many games the wii actually sells, though I would expect wii fit to be one of the bigger ...
Yes but Sarens "master" was pretty freaking cool too.
I guess I will once again put Orange Box in and try to see the appeal. So far I am not getting it but then I have only tried to drudge through HL2.
Single player is important to me. Halo3 actually had quite an entertaining single player game. Sure the games focus was on Multiplayer but they did not simply forget about single player the way UT3 has... or for that matter Battlefield (for a 360 example if you think I am only picking on UT3 because its on the PS3). If the game doesnt have anykind of significant single palyer its not a game I have an interest in playing. I would assume there are other people that agree with this stance as...
