I kinda think that GTA4 got perfect scores because they really wanted Rockstar to succeed at all costs... because if not, they would have tempted to let EA buy them.
Things to mark .1 off of GTA 4 for:
Gameplay mechanics: Auto-aim is shotty, hand-to-hand combat almost pointless, lack of a variety of weapons.
Multiplayer: Does not feel polished. Few co-op modes that never change destination points (I don't think it would have been too hard to do that right?) Some modes are utter crap. Cops and Crook had high potential, but only starting off with two max cop cars? Come on.

It's shameful. I personally can't stand watching GTA4's cut scenes more than once. I couldn't even bare to watch some of them the first time because they weren't very interesting. I actually skipped some of the cut scenes because they were so bad.
The dialog in the Metal Gear series have always been top notch and apparently MGS4 takes the cake, but 9.5 for lasting appeal doesn't seem justified.
These gaming review sites really needs to standardize their review proc...

Yeah, it's pretty stupid. GTA4 got a 10, but after I beat it, I didn't want to play it anymore. I didn't want to do random kill tasks and stuff. I was really hyped for the multiplayer, but it just doesn't seem very polished.
On the other hand, I played the MGO beta and was hooked even when GTA came out. I can't even begin to fathom where that 1/10th of a point went.
MGS fans were going to buy the game anyway. The good reviews are just icing on the cake. And apparently, the cake isn't a lie.

Remaking those games may confuse some people even more. There are some that still believe that Big Boss from MGS3 is Solid Snake.

They have no standards that is why. Apparently it's fine to mark up something for one game, but mark down another game for the exact same thing.
