So what you are saying is that the number of people not picking the game up, even though they preordered outweighs the number of people picking the game up without having it preordered? This makes zero sense.
worldwide that is. 2 million preorders in the US alone, so with canada, mexico and the guys who don't have the game preordered you will be about 2.8 million in NA.
So 700k needed in Europe is very possible.
Halo: Reach had basically the exact same number of preorders in the US and sold 4 million first week.
3.5 million first week for Gears of War 3 is damn possible. Awesome and well deserved.

Every Arcade game or basically every game which is distributed digitally is a sort of DLC. Not just mappacks or add-ons.

Whenever Eurogamer gives Brink and Gears of War 3 the exact same score, you know what is going on.
There are so many great games on the market that I barely look at indie games.
There are XBLA games that are worth every penny though.
Look at Toy Soldiers Cold War. It sold more than 160k units with a $15 price tag.
Fruit Ninja Kinect sold 150.000 with a $10 price tag. So it is not impossible to sell your games on XBLA and I bet those developers made a fortune with it.

Tales selling 700k lifetime in Japan. Maybe 300k in Europe + NA. So 1 million sales worldwide for one of the most popular franchises in Japan.

It is just that JRPGs and the games Japanese people like are not popular in the West, so the audience is limited by default.

Actually Japan is on its way to isolate itself from the rest of the (videogame) world.
They buy handhelds like there is no tomorrow, while the whole world is moving away from pure gaming handhelds and towards tablets and smartphones. I don't know how many news I read about iPad vs Vita stuff. And the 3DS fail did not stop these articles.

Gameplay > graphics any day of the week and twice on sundays.
The games I mentioned did an awesome job to deliver both, so I am fine with that.
Sure I want to see new IPs like Ryse or the revival of old IPs like Conker, Crimson Skies, Perfect Dark etc. , but we have to be realistic here. If there is a market that picks up every CoD, Fifa, Madden, MLB no matter what, the scream for new IPs will not be heard.
If I were MS, here is what I would do:
2011: Gears of War 3, Forza 4, Halo Anniversary, Kinect Sports 2, Dance Central 2
2012: Halo 4, Fable Journey, Star Wars Kinect, Alan Wake 2
2013: New Xbox 3! Launch LineUp: CoD with great new graphics, Fable 4 + random Rare game, Crackdown 3 etc.
2014: Gears of War 4, Forza 5, CoD
2015: Halo 5 + whatever is hot then.

Actually I expected a little bit more PS3s sold. The number is shipped I guess (even referred as "sold" means "sold to retailer")and VGC for example has it at 52.2m sold to consumers, so it is overtracked over there.
One of the best games this gen and reviewers failed to notice.
