Yes, they can detect non official hard drives. I've read about people receiving bans for using non official ones on other forums, and i'm sure its been mentioned by certain officials within Microsoft that they can detect them. They regard this as bad as the whole modded firmware stuff, as they link it all to piracy, or other hacks to profiles, achievements etc
Simples, the very places that are killing genuine game shops.....supermarkets! Sainsburys, Tescos, Asda, Morrisons...all sell games at stupid prices. Many of them are selling Modern Warfare 2 for under £30 tonight/tomorrow. Shopto.net is also a good source for games

I applaud any company that fights against piracy. Anything that makes the industry better is a good thing
