MS apparently had nothing to do with this. The esport company that is hosting Gears 5 is sponsored by an anti smoking youth group and they approached the creative director Rod Fergusson of The Coalition about removing any smoking references.
Yeah I don't remember anyone ever lighting up. Perhaps the General in Gears 1 had a cigar or something? I don't know Haha

Apparently it was the Esport presenter who asked them to since they're trying to make Gears an esport. And plenty of kids will watch the esport... but yeah, another case of blood and violence is okay, but a character smoking (not even promoting) is not okay...
Yep, seems stupid and unnecessary considering it's a rated M game. But I also dont remember anyone in Gears smoking anyway. If there has been it was never used as a narrative device or useable item like MGS or RDR.

I'd say this would be true if Iron Maiden was really relevant anymore. Ion Madien features a character that debuted in a game called Bombshell back in 2016, but they're trying say SHE resembles one of their band members Steve Harris. Also the skeleton in their logo resembles Eddie, their skeleton/zombie mascot which is simply ridiculous. It's a skull with a wick coming out like one of the grenades in the game. It's not a mascot like Eddie.
