I think I remember what you're talking about and it was some form of holographic disc that had lasers read all surface locations 360 degrees. Though I realy can't remember al the details on that.
It can't be BluRay for the simple fact that Bluray requires a different laser, it's unlikely that it's a new "DVD Format" in the traditional sense of the expression because again, adding an extra 4.7GB layer to the disc would again require a finer laser that would also require new hardware.

There 2 things that this is likely tied to according to people I know who work in the industry.

It's a pretty sweet game. I would have liked for the campaign to be a little longer.

Perhaps they need to have a 3 tier model. I don't care for XBL Arcade games and I never download demos. Perhaps the solution is to go with Silver, gold and platinum service levels for people who could care less about demos.
Don't get me wrong guys. I use XBL far more often than my PSN. My Playstation seldom gets used for gaming unless it's a 1st party title for a variety of reasons. I don't mind paying money for XBL but to suggest that bumping the price up by (yes I know it's not much) $10 per year for features and things I don't even see sucks.

The reason Jade Empire 2 hasn't received the sequel treatment up until now is because the project was axed about 2 years ago. Someone I know was actually working on the game and I even had the opportunity to play in a very very pre-alpha stage.

If it's a series you already played before, I can appreciate and understand that. I've never played the series before this and besides, I have a limited bandwidth rural area connection. Downloading all 3 of these titles would crush my monthly data throughput.
My buddy who worked at Bioware certainly thinks so. He said that Dragon Age (not DA2) was the last true Bioware title and to get ready for more cookie cutter crap with the Bioware name on it.
