I agree with the first commenter here...there's really been no single "greatest" console...so many different system contributed to the development of gaming as we know it. For example:
Magnavox Odyssey: The first major home console.
Atari 2600: Popularized gaming for families; unfortunately, also nearly killed the genre with E.T.
The NES: Helped gaming recover from the crash of the mid-80s; offered a significant graphical upgrade from the Atar...
I remember, around 1987 or so, seeing Betamax players for $40 new at a local electronics store (and VHS players were still $250+).
Same then as now. Maybe Toshiba is trying to move some soon-to-be obsolete players. I guess one could still use it as an upscaling DVD player.
