Take it with a BIG grain of salt. I think it's way too early to pronounce the PS3 as dead or dying. Folks, it's been out for three months, and there are many, many quality games in the pipe. Now, if those games come out, and there's still stagnant demand for the PS3, then Sony has a problem. Personally, from a non-fanboyish POV, I think they need to eat a little crow right now. A touch of humility will temper the many arrogant, presumptuous statements made before/during/after the launch. Sony...
Halo 2 and GTA: San Andreas came out w/in a month of each other, and I don't think either of them suffered for lack of sales. GTA IV may move more units due to being multi-platform, but Halo 3 will move more systems.
...a coherent, well-written article from a fansite. I think they're mostly right...post-Christmas bills, lack of games, etc...but they do need to add another reason: Regardless of who you blame (gaming media, fanboys, etc), Sony did suffer a lot of bad PR during their launch, and that will take some time to overcome. (Hmm...Sony needs games and PR help, MS needs quality control, and Wii needs games. Looks like the next-gen/current gen systems still have some work to do).
I think they've officially graduated from "vaporware" to "potential hit." Assuming, of course, that the gameplay doesn't stink. Eye candy will only take you so far. What's next? Duke Nukem Forever? (Hey, anything's possible).
I don't think it would happen, but if it did, imagine having nothing but EA for your sports games *shudder.* As the most recent editions of Madden (no 2K football to compete against) and 2K Baseball (no MVP) have proven, giving someone exclusive licenses and/or a monopoly leads to lazy development and a tendency to take your audience for granted.
As long as it gets here eventually, I'll wait. In the meantime, Oblivion will occupy my free time.
...will someone please officially confirm/deny this? Not that I care that much about the game--I mean, the original was OK--but this back-and-forth, confirmed/unconfirmed status constantly being bandied about on game sites is getting old...FAST. C'mon folks...this isn't a bombshell like "MGS4 coming to 360." It's Mercenaries, for pity's sake.
...Vincenzo, deepbrown, and I all have South Park avatars. Cool.
Right now, this is moot. Until we have a playable demo, and then the real game, we won't know how good the game actually is. That article smelled a little fishy...kinda like the planted film reviews that studios use to try to generate buzz for a big/expensive project. However, if the commenter is telling the truth on what he's seen, then this could be the first killer app for the PS3. Maybe not a Halo 3 killer...that game will be huge, no matter what...but if it approaches the E3 "traile...
...because black goes well with my other electronics. Plus, I can use my BB replacement plan on one (maybe pay a little extra) the next time my gorram 360 goes belly-up. (3x now). C'mon MS: Where's the quality control? (Just frustrated right now).
...let it be an all-purpose, all-encompassing banish button for foul mouthed 12-year-olds with more attitude than skill.
Nintendo had better be careful. They may waste the momentum they established for the Wii during Christmas. Consumers are getting frustrated...and they may turn to other options. Let's hope that by April, they're more plentiful. I'll buy one later this year.
...but will the gameplay be any good? SM2 was pretty good, but Ultimate SM was a bit of a letdown. Oh well. As long as the MOVIE rocks, I'll be happy.
Remember that Average Jane and Joe will likely go next-gen when either PS3 or 360 pass below $299, and especially when they hit $199. Right now, the 360 is in better position for a price cut, and that would help move more consoles, especially if they can get the Pro edition down to $299. A price drop would help Sony, but they also need to give gamers a reason to plunk down half a grand (or more) for their system: They need more games. Motorstorm will help, but until Sony releases a AAA title ...
From what I understand, 720 is easier to program for, likely due to the fact that 1080 is a memory hog.
And, I agree with Mandrake: "P" does seem to stand for "pi$$ing contest," as this particular topic has been debated/flamed ad nauseum.
The only people who truly need a 360 cooler, from my experience:
People who bought one of the launch systems w/cooling issues;
People who keep their console in a confined space (TV cabinet, for example)
Otherwise, I haven't found any other reason for one.
Under the Longshot description, he lists the "one hit, one bash" attack as a "unique" feature. Can't tell you how many times I've done that in Halo 2--body shot at close range w/the sniper rifle followed with a melee attack. Same with other weapons in H2. However, although not unique to Gears, it's still an effective strategy. First time I used it in Gears, I was accused of "cheating." I was told that such an attack was "not fair." Huh. :)
Well, at least the PSP will have ONE decent game...
...this surprises no one, especially considering the fact that it didn't sell for the PSP. (My store is still sitting on 3/4 of our launch shipment, even after a busy Christmas AND a price drop). Rockstar's gotta make their money back somehow, and a cheap PS2 port will help, especially since Liberty City Stories sold pretty well.
...no need to fix it. Oblivion is as close to a perfect RPG as they come, and I've played a LOT of RPGs. (Also was into D&D, but that goes without saying). The Star Trek game wasn't bad, and was certainly the best foray into the ST universe in a while. A few tweaks to the control scheme, and it would have been even better. A sequel would be welcomed, as long as they work on those stodgy controls. Otherwise, keep up the good work, Bethesda.
