"They can't afford any price drop if they want to stay in business with the PS3."
So essentially your argument is that, if they keep doing exactly what they were doing anyways, they'll go out of business? All of these 'pidgin economics' debates are ridiculous. You have no idea of what Sony can or cannot afford to do. The bigger question really is how they'll juggle investing in exclusives vs. price-cuts.
The bottom line is that what they're doing isn't ...
Although the broad patterns of history are instructive (N64's massive loss to Sony due to cartridge manufacturing costs and more for example) I don't necessarily think that we should use the last console war as indication of the current gen.
While true that Sony took over a year to lower the price of the PS2, Sony also had a year without competition. If Sony plans to follow the exact same model this time around, they may as well kiss their sales goodbye.
A price ...
Maybe the obvious fact that Microsoft would probably not like to be helping out their competitor should prevent random forum posts from being considered news...
There's probably a huge Sony fanbase waiting 'on the fence' about buying the PS3 and would probably be tempted if there's a significant cut in price. If Sony cuts the price, they'll incur even larger losses, but the increased install base could potentially pay off in the end.
The problem is that, the longer Sony waits, the more likely it is that these fence sitters are ultimately just going to go 360 (there's definitely a tempting game line up).
In my mind, Sony...
"They are already making quite a loss on each console selling at existing price(s), if they lowered it even further they'll probably go bankrupt."
While I'd tend to agree, I think that Sony's gotta look at the big picture. If they're willing to sack another couple hundred million with a ~$150 price cut, it would probably go a long way towards pushing blu-ray into dominance. But that's a lot of money, and it doesn't please investors...
I've seen Wiis at stores where I live (in the last week). I'm not saying demand isn't high, but they're only sold out at the official 'game stores' (i.e. EBgames) here.
But the fact that you had to basically sit down with the strategy guide open on your lap in order to play was pretty darned lame...
I honestly would not be at all surprised if the PS3 flopped right on its butt (I love Sony but the company has made every mistake it possibly could). However, given that the PS2 is still outselling the Xbox 360, I'd say that the argument that Sony has already 'lost' market dominance is a bit misleading (also don't forget that the install base of all non-Sony last gen/this gen consoles together is still ~1/2 that of the PS2).
I'm personally about as fed up with Sony as I could b...
Anyone could say that 'Lair' could not run in its current state on the Xbox 360 and they'd be right. That doesn't mean anything about its portability to the Xbox 360 with proper coding/optimization. The article is meaningless and there's no point in getting all worked up about it. Honestly, I sometimes wish that this site would stop posting the ridiculously conflict-instigating non-news that keeps popping up here... I don't mind seeing numbers (if the PS3 is last in sales, so be it), but all ...
I'm glad that I'm kept abreast of such amazing happenings in the video game industry!
EDIT: Umm, I should place a note here lest this statement be misconstrued as non-sarcastic...
I too would love to see some SquEnix games on PSN! However, it appears that SquEnix recently told Nintendo that they weren't all that interested in online distribution... I hope it's a Nintendo only thing...
I've heard that Xbox live is pretty frickin' sweet, but so far I've been pretty darned happy with PSN. The demos have been useful in terms of getting an impression about how the games will be (Ninja Gaiden Sigma!) and the video previews are in way better quality than anything you'd download on the intarweb. Sony seems to be keen on pushing this thing and I support them completely.
All, we're getting is a micro-dissection of an obvious trend. The PS3 hasn't released any big games in Japan right now (or in NA either) so it's no surprise that they're not moving titles. It would be pretty stupid to argue that Xbox doesn't have the shear weight-of-titles advantage right now. We'll have to see how things go once Sony starts throwing out some bigger titles over the course of the summer.
I don't think Sony's in a great position at the moment, but it's a bit nai...
"The 360’s DVD drive pulls information off of a 12X DVD disc twice as fast as the PS3’s 2X Blu-Ray does off of a Blu-Ray disc. The 360’s 12 DVD drive has a speed of 16.5 megabytes per second compared to the PS3’s 2X Blu-ray drive which has a speed of 8.7 megabytes per second."
Thanks for the info!
"Compression is the console game developers best friend and w/o compression you would have to always install a game to play it or in other words that con...
Blu-ray has a faster Max transfer rate than DVD... so there goes your non-argument. Plus, the HD is always going to be faster than any disk. We'd all be better off if every game installed to the HD (in terms of data transfer rate).
Stick to the facts.

Odion: The only reason Doom 3 was on 3 disc is cause it was CD, also when these devlopers say they use 40 gigs of space they say they just waste space by not comressing. They could easly put that game on a DvD.
You have to take into account the fact that compression reduces the speed at which the system can access the data on the disk. This could be resolved by first copying the data to the HD.
Listen, I don't think that most games will require more than 1 DVD's ...
You've also got to consider the psychology of the media as well as the average gamer. The PS3 may have excellent games on the horizon, but doesn't have games NOW. That's a big difference to the average consumer who's sitting there looking at Gears of War and others on the Xbox vs. what Sony claims will come out down the road.
Also, the $600 price tag is a huge turnoff to the average gamer. I personally think that both consoles are actually rather similarly priced (assuming you...
We could just discuss games without fanboys on both sides being ridiculous:
PS3 Fanboys: Stop pretending that everyone doesn't realize that Sony's console isn't doing as hot as they expected. It lacks games and is hemorrhaging exclusives, you've got to admit that Sony's got some work to do (Price cut anyone?).
Xbox Fanboys: Please, stop pretending that the 360 is technically superior to the PS3. We all know that it is not. Remember though that technical superiori...
Hey spartan112g, have you ever thought that gay gamers may not believe in/care about your 'hell'. If you're convinced that they're going to burn, good for you, let them burn. What's it matter to you?
As much as I love my PS3, the thing ain't selling. And if it ain't selling, it's not gonna get games. We can all flame Xbox as much as we want, but you can't deny that developers are giving it their all. I wish they'd phase out the stupid 'Core' system, that was a mistake. But pound for pound, unless Sony pulls something really nice out of their butts, Microsoft's still going to get versions of the PS3 games as well as some good exclusives. Graphically, the N64 looked better than the PlayStat...
