What else is there?
Particularly the quoted line. It's not a matter of liking the story or characters--it's a matter of considering GoW as being at the extreme edge of "quality." On this point, I agree 100% (and absolutely cannot see how anyone might disagree): if you think God of War 3's writing represents top-tier writing, you simply have NOT been exposed to any quality writing.
Basically, it asks the question: which version of the game should you play first,
The Witcher out of the box.
The Witcher out of the box with free content that makes it better.
The Witcher out of the box with more free content that makes it... uncensored.
-or-
The Witcher console port... that was NEVER RELEASED.
Herp derp derp derp.
...Especially for so undeserved a score. Heavy Rain is entertaining and all, but no matter how you look at it, it's quite flawed. Sure, the gameplay gets most of the criticism, but the writing doesn't fare much better.
Have you played the first Shogun? It offered a far more immersive experience than any of the games that followed. You genuinely felt like a feudal warlord--like a ruler, not some arbitrary hand directing the actions of tiny ant-people.
From the looks of things, CA is looking to recapture that feeling: a very good thing, in my opinion.
I think the timing of the announcment depends more on how close the game is to release than other competing products. I wouldn't be suprised to see TESV announced, especially if they're angling for a release between Q42010 and Q2 2011.
Bethesda may not be the best developer out there, far from it, but their games do manage to be fairly entertaining for a very long time, even if the writing does leave a bitter aftertaste.
And I think the biggest problem with TES isn't Bethesda, but the TES series itself. It's a very cliche world (from what I've seen in TES3 and TES4), with very boring monsters to fight. I don't think TESV will be any good unless it can include enemies that are bigger and more...
Doing something on consoles that has been done on PCs for decades isn't innovative... because it's not new. It may be new to consoles, but not to the industry. If you're going to take that route, it's only a bit further to limit things by specific platform--so Ratchet and Clank Future, though essentially a carbon-copy gameplay-wise of about 50 other platformers, was innovative because it was the first game of that type on the PS3. It's an absurd argument. Halo 3 wasn't...
I'd kill for another freespace. Shame the genre died.
This is true. I'm a huge Gundam fan, and Gundam is HUGE in Japan... so it really sucks having to wait so long for the announcment of a new game or something. The last one (the incredibly awesome) Gundam Senki was released 6 months after it was announced, with only a few screenshots and cut-scene trailer (no gameplay at all). The only gameplay footage to be had came on the week of release, and that was streaming (by some guys that really sucked at it, lol).
Hell, ACE R was...
@Jdoki
....it is. There are plenty of japanese games that feel western, and plenty of western games that feel eastern.
It's the same with art. "Japanese" is not a style of art. It is not a genre of games. It is a nationality. It is an ethnicity. It is not a genre.
The thing that often arises in JRPG v WRPG debates is a nasty kind of ignorance where, if you favor WRPGs, every JRPG is a farcical Dragon Quest meets FFVIII affair, and if you favor ...
There's a perfectly legitimate reason why JRPGs seem to be "sucking" now, more than before.
It's the same reason WRPGs seem to be sucking now, more than before.
It's a ratio thing. Games are becoming increasingly more expensive and time-consuming to produce--particularly RPGs--so fewer games are being produced, and those that are are released in a significantly decreased frequency. Think of it this way:
1 out of every 10 RPGs made, western or e...
no demo=no purchase.
Does anyone seriously care?
Duke Nukem is a generic shooter whose chief selling point is how generic it is. WTF? I'm as excited about it now as I was when it was first announced.
...
......
That is to say, not at all excited, if you caught my meaning.
They're both fairly bad, but IUD is worse than Last Remnant by a fair margin.
Gaming piracy?
I'm still pissed off at the MASSIVE impact the printing press has had on the piracy of literature.
I mean, goddamn.
ME isn't exclusive.
I also think a lot of people regard it as more of a shooter/action title. And those of us familiar with science fiction and/or RPGs in general tend to view ME as a sort of chimera of old story ideas and concepts we've seen a thousand times before, without any real "soul" or "heart."
My list of 360-exclusive RPGs is horrible... because you don't like most of them?
What?
How does that make ANY sense?
Quick run-through of PS3-exclusive RPGs:
-Disgaea 3
-Valkyria Chronicles
-Folklore
Erm... and I missing one? Don't get me wrong. I absolutely love Disgaea 3 and I adore Valkyria Chronicles, but those are more SRPGs than RPGs. The PS3 simply does not have any exclusive, traditional RPGs.
The 360, however, has... Star Ocean, IUD, FAble II, and Lost Odyssey.
To be honest, there are barely any RPGs this generation and most of 'em are...
On the one hand, I love it when good games spawn subsequent games (you know, "true" sequels). On the other hand, I really hate the recent trend of *planning* sequels. It just seems like an excuse to release half-done products, while simultaneously forcing players to pay more for incomplete products.
I first remember it happening with the .hack games--I thought to myself, who would spend $200 to play a single game? Even .hack//GU was the same (albeit awesome). It was...
