DS had pretty stiff competition, too. For all it's hardship, the PSP managed to make one helluva comeback.
Anyway, the main reason for the success of the DS over the PSP was because it was easy to make games for, which brought about a LOT of third party support.
This time around, however, it seems as though the Vita may be the easier platform to develop for. Some developers have already jumped ship. Apparently, 3D ain't easy and it ain't cheap. <...

Imagine something like the Wii-U controller--basically, an iPad with dual analog sticks and gaming buttons. Sounds awesome, right? Now imagine it running Windows with complete functionality.
Imagine making video calls on it. Playing games. Editing crap in Photoshop.
That's the future. One device that can do ANYTHING....
I'd rather see some SNES and GBA games. I couldn't care less about 3D remasters.

He's actually saying that they will be making games JUST for the United States, in addition to bringing over Japanese games.

FFXIII was the biggest failure in contemporary FF history. There was huge fan backlash. It's reception was... extremely bad compared to fan and industry expectations.

There will be mostly solid platforming with well-designed levels, fantastic presentation and music, but no story to speak of.
The only real thing this game has going for it is the merging of 3D and 2D platforming.
That, and that it's one of the few original 3DS games coming soon.
